Day 2: To the Out Skerries

Arriving at Lerwick in the morning, we took the bikes off the ferry, then went back on board for breakfast. Then off to the Whalsay ferry terminal at Vidlin to take us to Out Skerries, a small group of islands off the Shetlands, but not before we'd been to a supermarket to buy drink. There is no bar on the Out Skerries!

When the ferry arrived, we were advised that it was too rough to take the bikes. This was only a minor disappointment as there is only about half a mile of road there. And the seas were rough, on the ferry one of our number spent most of his time in the "heads". No, it wasn't me, I was quite enjoying the view from the car deck. Of course, we weren't supposed to be there while at sea ...

Without the bikes we had to walk to the B&B we were staying at. Peter arranged with the owner to take our stuff up in his car, we walked the 500 yards or so to settle in.

We spent the rest of the day walking over the island. The weather was reasonably bright and clear, but cold and windy. Motorcycle gear may not be good for walking in, but it's great for this weather!

We walked over the island, finding many birds and some of their nests. Many nest on the ground; there are no trees or shrubs at all, so it's the ground or the cliffs

We watched the ferry leaving. It passes through a narrow passage where the sea likes to show who's boss.

The B&B was a very old fashioned establishment, but very comfortable. The food was excellent, we all enjoyed our stay there. No bar, but with drink procured earlier, the evenings went very happily.
