Day 7: Scalloway and Lerwick

Old looms
Old radios

So for our last day on Shetland, we made our way to Scalloway, en route passing a little information centre that had a cafe and a museum. Several old looms caught my eye (because of my dearly beloved's interest in lacemaking, weaving and the like). There was also a room full of (mostly) ex-forces radio equipment, more my line.

the King of Norway

Then on to Scalloway, with its association with the war-time Shetland Bus, which consisted of small fishing boats that passed between Norway and the Shetlands, supporting the Norwegan resistance. There is a memorial to the boat crews, also a plaque presented to Scalloway by the King of Norway.

War memorial at Lerwick
A lifeboat at Lerwick

On to Lerwick, where Peter gave us time to wander the streets, so that those in need of retail theropy could get their fix.

I meandered around the town, and found, amongst other things, a war memorial for those from the Shetlands who lost their lives during both world wars. I also investigated Fort Charlotte (from an earlier era). An interesting little town.

We see "our" helicopter exercising ...
... before coming to
our ferry to wave to us

At last we go onto the ferry that would take us to the mainland. One of our number notice "our" helicopter exercising on another boat. After watching them lower a line, and pick up a man (I didn't see all of what was happening), it flew over to our ferry. Nick, the pilot, knew we would be on it, and came low and close so we could have a mutual waving session.

A very nice goodbye to our time on the Shetland Islands
