We're all aware of the dangers of tailgaters, particularly to the motorcyclist.

I observed an event that made me think a little more about our survival requirements.

I was travelling in a line of traffic, doing a steady 35 or so along a 40 mph single carriageway, one lane in each direction.

A couple of cars ahead there was a tailgater. He wasn't being aggressive, just driving too close to the car in front.

Another motorcyclist came from behind, overtaking as opposing traffic allowed. He passed me, then the next couple of cars, and had to pull in, right in front of the tailgater.

For the next half mile or so he had to stay there, and was probably very uncomfortable with this car very close to his rear wheel. Eventually he overtook the next car.

The moral of this is to make sure that as you overtake, you keep an eye on the vehicles you are overtaking to make sure you don't have to pull in front of someone driving too close to the one in front.
