However much you consciously scan what's going on around you, occasionally you can get a "feeling" that something odd is up.

As an example, I was approaching a roundabout. The approach was two lanes, the left clearly marked for turn left and straight on, the right for straight on and turn right. The exit straight on was two lanes.

There was moderate traffic in both lanes. I wanted to go straight on and was in the right hand lane as many cars were turning left.

So I go onto the roundabout, a car on my left. Just past the left exit, I felt something was wrong. I slowed; the car on my left continued round the roundabout presumably to take the right exit (or possibly go all the way round).

The car wasn't signalling, I don't believe the driver was aware of my presence (even though I was beside him going onto the roundabout).

What made me get that feeling all was not well? It could have been a number of things, possibly one or more of:

I was not conscious of any of these, but there must have been something, because I hadn't thought to myself "Watch out for him going round".

So, listen to that inner voice, it might save you some grief. (Oh, and by the way, never assume another driver is going where you expect him to!)
