Even Midge and Molly don't know which of them is which. They were born about twenty minutes apart, they were put together in a cot, and from that moment on, everyone was confused. Their parents tried to keep each with her own name, but they never could, the two were identical in every respect.

As babies they were always inseparable. Whenever they were not in sight of each other, they would cry. They did everything together, always wanted the same clothes and shoes (that's when they let their mother put shoes on them). They were never interested in toys of any sort.

They always slept in the same cot (they would cry incessantly if they weren't), then the same bed.

They loved their parents, but were always naughty, though never in a nasty way. Told to go to bed, they wouldn't. Tidy their room? No, though they would do so after their parents' anger had subsided.

From around six, they would climb a large tree in the garden. Always they would go right to the top. One day, one fell out of the tree and broke her leg, her later explanation was that she wanted to see whether a particular branch could support her weight. The other immediately jumped out of the tree, broke her leg in the process, in exactly the same place as her sister. This was just one of the times that when one of them got hurt, whatever it was, the other had to experience it the same.

It was around this age that their unusual physical abilities started to show, both strength and speed. Fortunately, they were old enough to control themselves, they generally hid this talent from others. They also seemed to heal remarkably quickly from the injuries they often inflicted upon themselves and each other during their play.

Aged nine or ten, they'd run through all the neighbours' gardens, clambering over walls or fences, forcing their way through hedges. Made no difference whether anyone was in the garden, the girls were in and out in no time. Never did any real damage to anything in the gardens, but it must have been very annoying. Their poor parents got no end of complaints, but Midge and Molly took no notice when they were told off; usually they would come into the house, their parents would try to be angry with them. Their response was one would run to their mother, the other to their father, jump up, wrap arms and legs round, and hug.

One day, one of the neighbours put barbed wire over his wall. When the first girl got to the top, she laid herself over the barbed wire, the other clambered over her sister. When they jumped down, the first one had numerous deep cuts where she'd pulled herself off all the piercings. They hugged each other, smeared blood over both their fronts, ran at the house's French windows, jumping up, spreading arms and legs as they hit the windows, leaving two bloody imprints of their star jump.

They carried on across more gardens. On their way back, the other one took her turn lying over the barbed wire. When they got home, before going into the house, they stripped and used the garden hose to clean themselves up a bit, then went into the kitchen. Their poor mother screamed, their father came running in, took one look, phoned for an ambulance.

The girls told the hospital staff what had happened. Social services were called, but there was no sign of cruelty or neglect by the parents, the twins told them exactly what they'd done. They had many stitches, a lot of dressings, kept in the hospital overnight. Sometime in the night, one got into bed with the other, they slept hugging.

Next day they could go home. All they wanted to do was say how sorry they were for tearing their clothes. That same day the neighbour removed the barbed wire.

The primary school they attended couldn't keep them in. They'd sit in class for the start of some lessons, then just get up and run out. They would go to the library and read about whatever was being taught. They never tried to hide their behaviour, completely matter‑of‑fact that they were leaving half way through the lesson, their only explanation was that they were bored. Inevitably a school inspector found out about what they were doing, but on checking to see how far behind they were, he found they were way ahead of any of their class‑mates.

Almost all the other kids loved them, but there were exceptions. Three boys from a class three years further on bullied the younger ones, teasing, taunting, they'd snatch a school bag and empty its contents onto the ground or hurl it away. One day Midge and Molly saw them going for one of their classmates. They ran to the boys, told them to stop. The boys laughed, one of them went up to Midge, started prodding her with his finger. As the third prod touched, she grabbed the finger and bent it back, completely dislocating it. He screamed in agony, ran into the school. One of the other two went to grab her. Again, waiting until he'd got his hand gripping Midge's arm, Molly got hold of the hand with her two hands, said in her own Molly‑ish way, "Molly doesn't like people who go for Midge." She jerked his hand and twisted it. An audible crack signified something was very damaged in his wrist or arm. He followed the first boy, howling. The third boy just ran off.

In the resulting furore, security videos showed who the antagonists were, and that the two girls were merely defending themselves after being physically attacked by boys much bigger than they were. Even the boys' parents saw that their boys were in the wrong, though the boys' injuries seemed excessive.

The three boys never again went near Midge, Molly, nor any of their classmates.

Another unusual behaviour was that they refused to wear coats, whatever the weather. If it rained, they got wet. If it was snowing, they got cold and wet. Never seemed to bother them, even when they were blue and shaking from the cold. They'd come into the house, take their clothes off in the kitchen so as to not drip water through the house, dry themselves off in the bathroom then go to their room, find clean clothes to put on. If their mother hadn't picked their wet clothes up, they'd pick them up and put them in the washing machine to await the next wash. If their parents were home, they'd run to them, hug them with their freezing hands, arms, and bodies. Their mother would cry, maybe because her children were so cold, possibly because they tried to be good over their clothes, or just because they loved her. Their father would just hug the one that had wrapped herself round him, he didn't know how to react.

They would never wear underwear. As babies they would always fight being put in nappies. They potty‑trained very early compared with others, their mother was convinced they understood that this would mean no nappies. As children, if panties were put on them, they'd take them off as soon as their mother's back was turned. This continued into the convent school, the uniform expected the girls to wear heavy dark navy blue pants. They got many a beating for not wearing them.

They were sixteen when their parents died.

Sleeping in the convent dormitory, they woke up in the early hours one morning, they were clinging to each other, just howling. This woke all the girls, none of them could calm the two. One girl went off to fetch a nun, there was clearly something very wrong with them.

After an hour or so, their howling turned to sobbing and crying, still no explanation, eventually they were quiet, but tears continued to flow. They wouldn't speak to anyone, wouldn't eat or drink.

After three days, they were getting very weak, but they continued to hug or hold hands. The nuns took them to hospital. They'd been in hospital often enough that they were put in the same bed, normally unheard of. Each was given a drip to get fluid and sustenance into them.

While they were in hospital, a solicitor, Daniel, came to see them. He was the family solicitor, did anything their parents needed, he and his wife Audrey had been family friends from long before the twins were born. He'd gone to the school first, there they told him that the girls were in the hospital. When he went into the hospital ward, the girls had recovered a bit, were sitting up, just staring in front of them.

When they noticed him come in, one of them spoke, the first words either had said since they'd woken at school. "We know."

He couldn't help but lean over the bed and hug them both.

"How did it happen?" asked the other twin.

"Plane crash. I'm so sorry. All I know is they were in a light plane somewhere in Africa, it hit the side of a mountain. They wouldn't have felt anything."

He got up, pulled over a chair, talked with them, told them how their parents were good people, they worked for several charities, liaising with locals, organising transport for relief goods, water purifiers, whatever they could do. The girls never knew what they did, their parents had never told them.

During this chat, one of the girls said they were thirsty. Daniel went to find a nurse, who organised getting something for the girls to eat and drink. Daniel continued to sit with them while they ate.

"What happens now?" Midge asked. Daniel replied, "Firstly, Samuel" ‑ their parents' accountant, also a family friend ‑ "and I are the executors. While there is a legal process to go through before we can process their estate, I can do things like arrange for them to be brought home."

"Yes please", said Molly. "We would like a proper funeral." Midge: "We would like them to be buried."

"I can start to organise that. It will cost a fair bit, their estate will pay if you are happy with that. I can tell you now, their will says they leave everything in a trust shared equally between you, you will finally have it when you are twenty‑one. Samuel and I are the trustees.

"Look, some things that you need to know. I know you are grieving, but I think it's better to tell you straight away."

Midge and Molly both nodded.

"They have talked with us over the years about you. I have to say, they loved you deeply, always felt they never could tell you how much." Daniel's eyes were watering, but he continued, "They told us what they wanted us to do if anything should happen to them. They said there's no point trying to persuade you to do anything you didn't want to, but what they would like is for you to finish your schooling, go to university to get whatever academic further education you want. I can say your parents were quite wealthy, all of this can be funded without denting the estate.

"Meanwhile, they want Audrey and me to be your legal guardians. They also said it would have to be with your agreement.

Molly said "Yes, we'd be …" ‑ Midge continued ‑ "… happy with that."

Daniel nodded, "I will start to get things rolling on the legal side.

"Let's talk about what should happen immediately. The doctor I spoke to as I came in said they knew you, that they've had you in here before several times, he knows that you recover amazingly quickly. Provided you've started eating and drinking, you can leave here tomorrow after he's checked up on you.

"But I think it would be better for you to not go back to school until everything is sorted and your parents are laid to rest."

"Thank you" said both girls in unison, "We would like that."

"You can stay in our spare room, or you could go to your home, I know I can trust you not to do anything stupid, and at age sixteen you are allowed to live without an adult, though I am responsible for your well‑being. Or you can suggest something else. You don't need to tell me what you want until tomorrow."

"Home" chorused the girls.

"Okay, I'll tell the school, I have house keys for you. I'll give you some cash and I can order in food and such, or if you prefer I can leave that to you, so long as you promise to look after yourselves."

"We promise."

"Anything you want to ask me?"

Midge, after a momentary glance at Molly, "Look, thank you for what you are doing. Can you help organise the funeral?" Molly continued, "We'd like it to be humanist, none of us is religious. Something a bit special." Alternating, "We would like a couple of our school friends," "Kitty and Chloe, to be there," "we'd like all four of us to be dressed" "in a way to honour" "our parents." ‑ the last two words spoken together.

Daniel responded, "I am sure that can be arranged. As I said, we can fund anything you might want, it will come out of the estate. As far as I am concerned, and I know Samuel will agree, we will spend whatever you would like. If the money isn't available immediately, I am more than happy to lend it to you.

"Suppose I pick you up from here, take you home, I'll get Samuel to meet us there, we can talk about things."

"Yes please, that sounds good" from Molly.

The next afternoon found the two of them with Daniel, Audrey, Samuel and his wife Natalie, sitting round their kitchen table drinking tea, Audrey had brought round sufficient food to keep them going for at least a couple of days.

They talked about arrangements, a funeral, could Daniel give a eulogy, then Molly and Midge would say something? The funeral would be open to anyone. A wake afterwards in the nearby hotel for friends, family, neighbours.

After a bit more discussion, Natalie asked Daniel, "Do you think we could get their friends from school to stay here?"

"Yes please" from Midge and Molly.

Daniel: "I'll see what I can do, I'll go round there as soon as we've finished here."

Midge asked if they could go to a dressmaker to make some special dresses for Kitty, Chloe and themselves. Natalie phoned one that she used. After their conversation, she said "Yes, she would be delighted to do it, she would like all four girls to be there first thing tomorrow morning for measurements and find out what you want. I told them we'd get you there."

After a bit more discussion, and the inevitable "Are you sure you'll be all right?", the four adults each gave the twins a joint hug, the girls wouldn't separate for individual hugs.

An hour later, Daniel arrived back, Chloe and Kitty with him.

Daniel had told the convent school about the deaths. He had to persuade them to release Kitty and Chloe, the threat of withdrawing Midge and Molly and their funding from the school was sufficient. He told Kitty and Chloe about the twins' parents as he drove them to the house, they were in tears when they arrived. Assuring themselves that they were all right, the adults left.

The girls got something to eat and drink, all four undressed, and had a squashed shower together. All got into the parents bed. With Midge and Molly trying to get the scent of their parents from the pillows, they all cried themselves to sleep.

In the morning, they got up, not bothering to dress. They had some cereal for breakfast, they all liked tea made properly, unlike the stewed abomination they got at the convent, Midge and Molly had to show Kitty and Chloe the right way to make tea.

They cleared up, put everything away, then sat and talked about Midge and Molly's ideas for the funeral.

A few minutes before nine, Daniel arrived, rang the doorbell. Molly went to answer it ‑ after their night's sleep Midge and Molly were prepared to be apart just that little bit.

Molly opened the door, Daniel took one look at the naked girl in front of him. He immediately turned his back, exclaiming, "Good god, girl, put some clothes on. I'll wait for you out here."

He walked hurriedly to his car.

They had to put their school uniforms back on, none of Midge or Molly's clothes would fit them anymore. They went to the car, Midge and Molly went straight to the back, both Chloe and Kitty wanted to be in the back with them, but there were only three seats. They did 'rock, paper, scissors' to choose, Chloe won, she clambered into the middle between Midge and Molly. When their seatbelts were done up, Molly and Midge put heir arms across Chloe's shoulders, so touching each other along their length.

They sat in silence in the car, but when they arrived outside the dressmakers, they fought to get out, and for the first time in days, they laughed. They then fought to be first into the shop, where the owner was waiting for them.

Daniel introduced himself. Rachel welcomed the girls, said how sorry she was about the parents, she would do all she could to make them what they wanted. They were to call her 'Rachel'. She asked them their names, they said them in turn, "Kitty", "Chloe", "Molly", "Midge". Rachel did a double take of Midge and Molly, "How am I supposed to tell which is which?" Daniel laughed, "Why should you be any different?"

"But", said Rachel, "their measurements will be different, I need to know."

Daniel interrupted. "Sorry, a moment, listen, I can't stay. I've got each of you a phone, I've preprogrammed them with all four of your numbers, also mine, Samuel's and Rachel's here. Each is named. Kitty and Chloe's were easy, the other two I've labelled 'Molly or Midge' and 'Midge or Molly'. You can fight over whose is which. I'll give you the chargers and stuff when I take you home.

"I've also got Midge and Molly debit cards, please don't go mad. I've set up a bank account for you, I'll pay an allowance into it from your estate, or it will be once probate is granted, meanwhile I'm happy to lend the money to you. You can't overspend. If you do want something more than you've got, let me know, we'll see what we can do, just remember I'm acting as your parent, I won't let you waste money."

"I can't get cards for Kitty and Chloe, but I'm sure you can work that out. These are the PINs, I suggest you go to a cash machine, you can change the PINs to something you can remember.

"I'll leave you here, ring me when you're done."

They took the phones, Midge and Molly gave him a joint hug, both said "Thank you" in unison.

Daniel went, leaving the girls with Rachel.

"Okay", said Rachel, "Let's go into my workroom, I will take your measurements, then we can see what you want."

She opened a door behind the counter, another girl was in the workroom. "This is my assistant, Holly, she will help me make the dresses." Rachel introduced them all, but had no idea which was which between Midge and Molly. "While I'm in the back, Holly, could you mind the shop?"

Rachel took them into a big room with a large cutting table in the middle, several sewing machines round on smaller tables, a small seating area with a settee and a couple of armchairs.

She said to the girls, "If you take your clothes off, I can measure you properly. You can leave you underwear on."

The girls all took off their school uniforms, but there was no underwear in sight.

Rachel gasped, not because all four were stark naked. "My god, you are beautiful, all of you. It will be an absolute pleasure to make dresses for you, they couldn't have better models to display them."

She started with Kitty, made many measurements, wrote them down in a large ledger, Kitty's name at the top of the page. Then Chloe, she did the same. Rachel turned to Midge and Molly, said "I'll take one of you", she took one by the hand. "Are you Midge or Molly?" "Yes", replied the twin, trying to suppress a grin.

Rachel, smiling: "So you're going to be difficult. Okay, I'll do you first, whichever you are."

Without writing a name at the top, Rachel did her measurements, noting them all. "Now the other." Midge and Molly swapped over. She started to measure, but before writing anything down, she compared her measurements. After half a dozen, she looked a little perplexed, after a few more, her mouth was hanging open. She completed them, had to sit down. "I don't believe it, every single one of the measurements is exactly the same for both of you. I've never seen anything like it, and I've dealt with many twins over the years."

She wrote 'Midge and Molly' at the top of the page, shaking her head.

"Look", she said "I don't like those uniforms on you. Talk about hiding your lights under bushels. I have a lot of identical dresses that were originally for a chorus in a stage play. I should find some in there to fit you, would that be all right?" She disappeared into a storeroom, came out moments later with four cotton dresses, sleeveless, buttons all the way down the front.

The girls slipped them on. The hem was maybe seven inches above the knee, the neckline showed just a touch of cleavage.

Rachel said "Sorry if they are a bit short, they show a bit more of you than they might, are they all right?" All four girls were admiring themselves in a mirror, "Perfect" from all four.

"I've no underwear you can have, you'll have to use what you were wearing when you came in." All five laughed.

"Right", said Rachel, "Let's hear what you want."

Midge went to her uniform, lying neatly folded on a chair (Molly's was in a heap on the floor). From a pocket she brought out a sheet of paper, on it she'd made some sketches.

"Something like these?"

Rachel stared at the sketches. "They look gorgeous. Just describe them to me to make sure I've got them right in my mind."

Midge: "All black, made from something with a bit of a sheen, and we'd like them to cling. This is a statement to show what our parents have made, the least we can do is to give people the opportunity to see it."

Between them, Midge and Molly described what they wanted, along the lines of:

Kitty and Chloe's dresses to be all black, sleeveless, tight fitting, square cut necks, a little cleavage, back cut half way down, quite short skirts with a slit over the left thigh to allow their legs to move, otherwise plain. Molly and Midges' dresses separated into bodice and skirt, the bodice with a lower neckline and back, but trimmed with black lace to the same height as Kitty and Chloe's. The bodice to stop just below the breasts, the skirt to start just above the hips, the two parts joined by black lace. The skirt's hemline two inches higher than Kitty and Chloe's, black lace trim extending it to the same length.

"This is a special funeral for our special parents, we want to look special for them."

Rachel was somewhat taken aback. The sketches, the detailed description, the sentiment behind them.

After some time staring at the sketches, she said "Thank you, you've just given me the best job of my whole twenty years in the business." Pulling her gaze from the sketches, she said "I have some material I think will suit." She went into the storeroom, came out with a bolt of black cloth, She put it on the cutting table, unrolled a few feet, snipped the edge a foot from the end, ripped right across to get a strip. "Molly, take your dress off, let me put this over you."

After a glance at each other (which of us is Molly?), one of the twins obliged. Rachel laid it first round Molly's midriff, then up and down from breasts to groin, all the time looking to see how the material followed Molly's contours. She tried it over her bottom. "Yes" she said to herself. Then, to the girls, "That's how it should be. That'll do what you want. Seam up the back and the sides, buttons down the front. No, wait, buttons will not look good on a shaped dress, they will pull the material, and impossible where there's lace. Zip up the back, from the skirt to the neckline. To keep the vulnerable look, we'll use a long visible metal zip. We'll shape the dress to follow every one of your curves. But your skirt split must have a small overlap so you leg doesn't show when standing, but will when you walk.

"This is going to be my best work ever."

Then "Oh, I'm getting carried away, does what I suggest sound all right to you?"

Midge and Molly: "Perfect".

Kitty: "We'd discussed this yesterday evening, but never thought of the zip, we are too used to buttons."

Chloe: "What about the lace for Midge and Molly?"

Rachel went into the storeroom, rummaged a bit, came out with two rolls of black lace. The first was broad in width, maybe eight inches, the second was about two inches wide.

She showed the first, "This will do the midriff, we'll run it up and down in strips, that makes shaping it to follow your torso, waist and hips better. It's a similar design to the narrow one which we'll use for the neckline and hem. The midriff one is more see‑through, we will have to double it to get the same effect as the neck and hem.

Chloe took the end of the broader lace, laid it over Molly's bare front. She said "The single layer looks gorgeous."

"You're right" said Rachel, "but it is perhaps a little much for a funeral."

"This is not a normal funeral" said Midge. "It's for our Mummy and Daddy" from Molly.

"Single layer" from Kitty.

"Single layer" echoed Rachel.

Rachel once again looked at the sketches. "You want black chokers?" Midge answered, "Please, but as an extra we'd like our names in silver letters on the chokers, on all four."

Rachel: "Real silver would look beautiful, but it is expensive." "Can it be done?" "I'm sure. Look, there's a jeweller a few doors up the street, let's go to him, see what he says."

They started for the door, then from Rachel "Molly, before we go out, perhaps you could put your dress on?"

A few minutes later, they entered the jeweller's shop. An oldish man, probably in his seventies, was working on some jewellery. He was wearing a leather apron, a jeweller's glass in his eye. He looked up as they came in, his eyes opened wide at the sight, the glass fell out unnoticed, the spectacles that were propped on his forehead fell onto his nose.

Very soon he's understood what they want. He already knew about the funeral, word seemed to have got around. He looked at Midge's sketch, muttered "beautiful", then "What sort of letters, how big?"

Between them they talked through what would look best. Although this was an unusual commission for him, he knew exactly how to set about it. He went to a computer, suggested several fonts. He used a drawing package to show a broad black horizontal line with a pinkish background representing a choker on skin, wrote Chloe in light grey lettering representing the silver.

Between them they came up with something that satisfied the girls. He repeated for the other names.

The jeweller then talked to Rachel about how the letters would be attached, provision for invisible stitching that would allow the letters to lie flat on the choker.

When everybody was happy, he sat down, worked out how much silver would be needed, he gave them a rough estimate. Midge phoned Daniel, told him what they were doing, told him what the jeweller had said. His reply was that if that's what they want, there's no reason why not, the money was not a problem. He asked if the jeweller needed a deposit. Midge turned to the jeweller, asked him, the jeweller said he would need the money to buy the silver. Midge relayed that to Daniel, they talked for a moment, then Midge said "Thank you" and hung up. She turned to the jeweller, said "He'll pay you when he picks us up."

"How long will it take?" asked Molly. The jeweller started talking to himself, "I can start on the letter moulds tomorrow, that'll take, what, two days? I should have the silver the day after tomorrow, take two days to make the letters, let's say another two to finish them off. Hmm. Another two days for contingencies. What's today?"

Then to the girls, "I think there's about eight days of work, so in ten days time. No, look, I know this is urgent, I'll work the weekend, so eight days from tomorrow, unless you're not happy with them, and I have to redo. That's a lot of hours of work, it will be quite a high bill."

Molly: "Thank you, we really appreciate that."

Midge: "The money won't be a problem. We're sure they will be perfect, and we have to plan a date for the funeral."

Kitty turned to Rachel, "How about the dresses? And how long to finish the chokers when the letters are ready?"

Rachel: "These dresses are a true labour of love. The two for you and Chloe will be a day each, for Midge and Molly, probably two days each. We may need another half day for any changes after the first for the easier two, let's allow a day each for the more difficult dresses. What's that? Nine days? Too long, don't worry, for these I'll work all hours. I'll have them finished before the chokers, provided you can come in whenever I need you for fittings. It'll only take an hour or so to sew the letters on to the chokers."

Midge: "Thank you both, we appreciate what you are doing for us."

All four girls went to the jeweller. Much to his delight, Chloe and Kitty gave him a kiss on his forehead. Then Molly and Midge each gave him a little kiss on his lips, he was very taken aback. Recovering quickly, "Thank you, but don't do that again before I've finished, I could have a heart attack." And then, with a wink, "And, you need to be careful. I may be old, but I'm not dead. Now, get out, I've work to do." He grinned.

When they got back to Rachel's shop, Midge phoned Daniel, he said "Pick you up in ten."

Midge looked at the phone in her hand, asked Rachel (who was lost in thought, holding lace in her hands) "Would you have anything that could be used as a belt?"

Rachel pulled herself out of her trance, collected her thoughts, "Yes, your dresses have belts in case the performers wanted them, I'll get some. I need to stitch loops on the dresses for them, it'll only take a minute. She called "Holly?" Holly came in from the shop, "Help me stitch belt loops on these."

She disappeared into the back, Holly prepared needles, thread and found some tape of the right colour to make the loops.

Rachel returned with four belts that matched the dresses, she put one round Molly's waist. Molly immediately pushed it down, so it was halfway down the curve of her hips.

Without argument, she and Holly sewed the loops on. Molly's was first, Rachel said to her "You're right, that's just where it should be. You girls have some natural talent."

Just before they'd finished, the shop doorbell dinged. Holly went to check who had come into the shop, she led Daniel into the workroom.

Daniel looked at the girls, his mouth dropped open, after a moment he closed it, shaking his head. It was his turn to say "Talk about hiding your light under a bushel. I'm going to have to be careful, I'm a married man."

They all grinned at him. Rachel said "I think you are going to have to get used to them."

Daniel nodded. Then "Are we all done here?" From Rachel: "I think so. I have your phone numbers, I'll call when I need you to come in."

Daniel thought for a moment, "Look, I can't keep giving you a lift, we are going to have to sort something." "It's all right", said Midge, "It's not far, we can walk, quicker than you coming out to us anyway."

"If you're happy with that. Could you please let me know where you are if you go away from the local area, though? I will worry about you."

"We'll text you."

Holly got them a carrier bag that was large enough to hold all their school uniforms, then they said their goodbyes to Rachel and Holly. Before they got in the car, Midge said to Daniel, "One last favour, is there a phone shop nearby, we'd like some belt holsters."

"Of course, stupid of me, I should have thought of that. There's one just round the corner, that's where I got the phones from. Come on, let's go round there."

They went into the shop, the man behind the counter recognised Daniel from the previous day. "So, these are the lovely ladies you wanted them for? And I must say, they are lovely. Was there something wrong with the phones?"

Kitty answered, "No, they're perfect, we were wondering if you had any belt holsters for them." The man nodded, went into the back, came out with several of different colours, black, brown, green, blue, pink, yellow …

The girls looked at each other. Midge said "Not black. We don't need them then" ‑ obviously referring to the funeral. "Light brown?"

Kitty and Chloe nodded. Molly was looking at the brighter colours, but in the end she nodded as well. The man went back, brought out four holsters, still in their original packaging. "These have a slot for a credit card." Then "On the house." Midge was about to protest, then "Look, I heard about the funeral, please let me do this. It's nothing in the scheme of things, but my wife and I would feel guilty if we charged you."

His reward was a brief kiss on his cheek from Molly, Midge saying "Thank you, we appreciate that."

They called in at the jeweller's for Daniel to pay him for the silver. Out of his shop, Kitty and Chloe ran to the car. "My turn" shouted Kitty, Chloe reluctantly went to the front.

A few minutes later they were back at home. Daniel asked if they were all right, they said they were. Then Midge asked, "Look, we have something very serious to talk to you about, can we have an hour's consultation with you as our solicitor? The sooner the better."

"Can you give me a clue what it's about?"

"Not yet, we need to discuss it between us first."

Kitty and Chloe looked a little puzzled, but said nothing, they knew better than to ask Midge and Molly what they were thinking about. If the twins wanted them to know, they'd tell them.

Daniel phoned his office, spoke for a few minutes, then "I can squeeze you in tomorrow for ten? I may have to keep you waiting for a few minutes, though." "We'll be there, thank you." Daniel nodded and left.

Midge turned to Kitty, "Can you two go to the supermarket, get us stuff to live on? Molly and I want to talk over something, it concerns you, but we don't want you to know about it yet."

Kitty and Chloe looked at each other, then Chloe nodded, Kitty said "Okay, but you are worrying me, no, both of us, a little"

Molly said "Please don't be. Nothing may come of it, in which case we will never tell you what it is, it'll have been as if nothing ever happened. But if it does, you will like it."

Kitty and Chloe looked at each other, but trusted the twins. "Okay, where are there some shopping bags?" "That cupboard." Midge added "While you are out, get four sets of keys cut for the house, one set for each of us, we can return the spares to Daniel."

Taking the keys with them, Midge and Molly's debit cards tucked in with their phones, shopping bags in their hands, they went out.

Midge and Molly had a long conversation, something along the lines of "Can we leave school and live here on our own?" "According to Daniel, that would be legal, but as he is responsible for us, he would have to approve it." "Can we leave Chloe and Kitty at the school?" "No, not without us. The nuns would take it out on them if we left." "Do we know about their backgrounds? Who are their guardians? Who finances them at school?" "I seem to remember both are under local authority child care, no idea about their funding." "Can Daniel fix this?" "I think that if he can't, he would know someone who can." 'Let's try for it.' 'Yes.' The last two were unspoken, just looks.

The whole conversation took quite a while. Not long after they'd finished, the other two returned, before they came in they tried the front door keys, all worked. They came into the kitchen, Kitty asked "Are we safe?" "Yes" chorused Midge and Molly. The twins went over to Kitty and Chloe, gave them each a hug, making them drop their bags. "Careful", Kitty tried to say as she was getting a kiss, "Eggs"

Having released them, Midge said "Let's eat, we do have something to talk about, but we're famished." The twins still hadn't fully recovered from their bout of starvation.

None of them were great cooks, Kitty and Chloe's knowledge was just what they'd gleaned when doing chores in the convent kitchen, but between the four they managed to produce something that was perfectly edible. For a short while, all forgot why they were here, there was quite a bit of teasing and laughter.

After they'd eaten, they sat down in the living room, feeling very grown‑up with a pot of tea, cups and saucers, milk in a jug.

After a little while, Midge got serious, she started speaking to Kitty and Chloe, then between her and Molly: "Listen, please hear us out before you comment. We all hate the convent." Nods. "We are going to ask Daniel if we can leave." Kitty and Chloe both look aghast, about to speak, but before either could, "No, wait. We won't leave unless we can bring you with us." Kitty and Chloe sat there, open‑mouthed. "We don't know what is possible, we need to talk with Daniel. We are pretty sure that if he agrees, we could. It depends on your guardianship and funding. But we will not leave unless you can, the nuns would kill you."

Kitty and Chloe, somewhat dumbfounded, start asking questions.

"Where would we live?"

"Here, at least for now."

"What about schooling, we all want our qualifications."

"From what we can gather, we can certainly afford home schooling. You may be able to, we don't know, but if Daniel would allow it, we would fund yours as well. We would all do a lot better with proper teaching."

Lots more questions, most of which Midge and Molly couldn't answer. "We'll talk it over with Daniel tomorrow."

The one question Midge and Molly did not have to ask was 'Would you like that?'

After they'd gone quiet, Molly, said "Please don't get your hopes up too much, it may not be possible."

While they were sitting there the doorbell rang. Midge and Molly went to the door, it was two sets of neighbours. "Look, we'd all like to express how sorry we are, they were lovely people."

Midge and Molly, in unison, said "Please come in, we would like to talk."

The visitors looked at each other, but realised that the way the twins spoke together meant they weren't just being polite.

They went in and were introduced to Chloe and Kitty. Chloe turned to Kitty, who nodded ‑ they were getting into this visual communication thing. "We'll leave you to it, we'll clear up the dinner things."

Midge smiled at her, mouthed 'Thank you'. The two left, taking the tea tray with them.

They talked about Midge and Molly's parents, how they always got on well, good neighbours. It was Molly who said "Except for their misbehaving children."

One of the men said "Listen, we realised that whatever you did, there was never any malice in you, you did no real damage, you hurt no one."

The other man said "That was my barbed wire. When I saw what you had done, I couldn't forgive myself. I should have known nothing would stop you."

Molly went over to him, gave him a hug. "Look," she said, "We actually enjoyed it in our own way, we'd seen a film about the first world war, how a soldier would lay over the barbed wire so others could use him as a bridge."

"Yes, but they wore thick uniforms, those would protect them from the worst."

Midge grinned, "No harm done. Except to our clothes." "And to those who fainted at the sight of the window." Midge went to his wife, gave her a hug. "Really sorry, didn't think, it just seemed the right thing to do at the time."

The other man's wife, smiling, "Don't worry, they were using that story to get invitations to dinner parties, kept them going for ages."

"Anyway," the first man said, "I am sorry. And secretly we liked to see you going through the garden, it was like seeing wild animals there." His wife responded "We were seeing wild animals."

This brought some laughter from all of them.

Then came offers of help, anything they wanted, please come round and ask.

They got up to go, the two girls gave each of their visitors a hug. As they were leaving, "If you want to go to the funeral, we'll let you know when it is when we know."

Midge closed the door, the two went hand‑in‑hand into the kitchen, to find Kitty and Chloe with no clothes on. "She sploshed herself, took her dress off, so I took mine off." Midge and Molly dropped theirs. "Hope we don't get any more visitors."

It wasn't long before Chloe said "I'm tired, I'd like to go to bed." Kitty nodded, "Me too."

Molly: "We'd all like to."

All four went upstairs, another joint shower, and into bed. They sprawled every which way, hands resting on each other, and went to sleep.

In the morning, they got up, and as usual didn't get dressed. Downstairs they made breakfast, just toast, marmalade and tea to drink, They liked feeling very grown up, though it was somewhat incongruous since they weren't wearing anything.

Midge and Molly started going round the house, just looking in cupboards and drawers, familiarising themselves where everything was kept, accompanied by some gentle sobbing, but it was something they had to do. Before they'd got very far, Midge's phone rang, it was Rachel. "Look, I've hit a snag, can you come in?" "Be there straight away."

All four put their dresses on, walked the half mile to the shops, went into Rachel's. Holly was in the front, she just pointed to the workroom, the four girls went in.

Straight down to business, Rachel said "I can't do the lace with a square cut neckline, it just flops, it won't work." She was almost in tears. She showed them a trial piece she'd put together on a mannequin.

She was right, without any support there was nothing to hold the top edge up.

She said "I've never used this lace on the square before. Putting a support along its top edge would spoil the effect completely. I'm afraid to keep the square neck would mean no lace."

Molly, somewhat petulantly, "Molly wants lace."

Rachel: "That I understand. The only thing that would look right and hold the lace would be a round neck, the curve along the top will hold it up. But it's not your original design, which I loved."

Molly: "Can you do a mock‑up of a round neck? So we can see what it might look like?"

"It'll take me a little while, the lace has to be cut and sewn to get the curve, and you have to match the pattern at the joins. That takes time. Can you come back in a while?"

Midge "We're due to see Daniel at ten, we'll be there some time, we should be back maybe eleven‑ish?" "Yes, that should be time enough."

The girls all gave Rachel a hug, she seemed so down about this. As they walked out, Midge said to Holly, "She's really upset, make sure she knows we understand her problem, that we are in no way disappointed." She gave Holly a brief hug, and they left.

Midge said "Look, it's quarter to ten, let's go straight to Daniel's office, he has a waiting area, I'm sure we can wait there." Midge didn't have a watch, but the twins always seemed to know what time it was.

They walked round. Audrey was also his receptionist and secretary, she welcomed them in, gave the twins a big hug. She didn't say anything, the hug said it all. She released them and gave Kitty and Chloe a hug.

She said: "Daniel's with a client at the moment, he's squeezing you in between two. Can you sit there?" indicating a couple of small settees. "Thank you" from one of them. Audrey was a little surprised when all four got on to one settee, almost fighting to squeeze in and get comfortable.

Audrey shook her head, quietly laughing at them, but stopped laughing when she realised that both Kitty and Chloe were trying to comfort Midge and Molly, both of whom were gently crying.

After half an hour, Daniel's door opened, his client shook his hand, nodded to Audrey, then did a double take at the four girls squashed in the settee. He gave Daniel a quick querying look, but Daniel remained silent and expressionless until the client had left.

"Just give me a moment, got to complete some notes."

After another few minutes, he opened the door again, beckoned them in.

He'd got a couple of chairs at his desk, he carried two more from the wall to his desk.

"Right", he said, "What's on your mind?"

Midge and Molly did their usual alternating speech, infuriating to someone who didn't know them. It seemed to get more staccato when they were excited or emotional, in this case nervous. Daniel was not put out at all by the manner of speaking, he'd heard them before.

"We want to leave the school." "We would live at home." "We would like to be educated at home." "But we can't unless Kitty and Chloe" "can join us. "We can't leave" "them in that dreadful" "place."

Kitty blurted out "The nuns would kill us." The other three girls nodded vigorously.

Daniel looked at Kitty, then at the nodding girls, they clearly meant it.

His training kicked in, he made no immediate reaction, no change in facial expression. Before he spoke, he studied each girl in turn.

"Explain what you mean by 'kill'."

"Just that" from Midge. "They already beat us with canes and whips."

Kitty said "They have whipped all of us several times, Midge and Molly much worse than us, they come back bleeding from the lashes."

Midge and Molly started gently sobbing.

Chloe put in "These two have told us that they refuse to react to the lashes, so they are whipped harder and harder until the nuns get tired out."

Kitty: "When they come back to the dormitory, all they can do is lie on their fronts on their beds. We try to bathe their wounds, but that just hurts them more. The nuns hate all of us, but Midge and Molly the most. If they left us there, the nuns know we are their friends, they'd do it to us."

Chloe "And we aren't as strong as these two. It would kill us."

Daniel was taken aback. He knew the girls were serious, he knew that, at least within the family, Midge and Molly had never lied.

"Haven't you told anyone?"

Chloe: "No one believes us."

Midge, trying not to cry: "You know we've been to hospital for other things. Some of the staff have seen the remains of the lashes." Molly: "I think they report it, but it seems to get lost somehow."

Daniel thought for a moment, then: "Look, if what you say is true, and I don't doubt your word, it just seems incredible, I will have all four of you out of there regardless of the law."

He picked up the phone, talked to Audrey quietly at first, then with his voice raised, "I don't care who I've got, I want the rest of the day clear." Then, a bit quieter, "Sorry, didn't mean to shout, but I have to do this, these poor girls. I'll explain later."

"Look," he said to the girls, "I will make some enquiries. I know a few people. Do you know anyone at the hospital who's seen you like this?"

Midge and Molly mentioned a couple of names of nurses, but they only knew their first names.

Daniel thought for a moment. "I do know a private investigator. I would like to get him involved, he will find out things. Do you mind if I tell him what you've told me?"

Kitty gave an answer, "Just so long as the nuns don't know it was us."

Daniel: "They're bound to find out eventually. Look, you concentrate on your present arrangements, don't worry about anything else. I will sort this, at least for you four."

Then "It's usually you that hugs me, let me hug you." They stood up, he gave each of them a strong hug, kissing them on the top of their heads as he did so. He went to his door, showed them out, with a last "Don't worry." He turned to Audrey. The girls just heard him say "Come in, I'll tell you about it, I need help on this."

They left his building, they were at a bit of a loss. Chloe suddenly said "Shoes". They caught on, they've not thought about them. "Do you think Rachel can advise us?" "Let's go."

They walked round to Rachel's, opened the door, there was no one in the shop. After half a minute, Rachel appeared, "Oh, hello, not ready yet."

Midge: "No, we were wondering about shoes, what to get to go with our dresses."

Rachel said "You need Holly. Just a mo." She disappeared. Moments later Rachel came out with Holly. "Sorry", said Rachel, "So excited about the dresses, clean forgot. Yes, shoes are important. They must be right. Holly is the one for those, she's better than I am at the whole ensemble. Holly, take them to the shoe shop, see what you can sort."

Holly grinned, pleased to do this. She grabbed Midge's hand, ran out with her, the rest followed on, laughing at Holly's enthusiasm.

They went to the shoe shop, there were no customers when they went in. Holly went to one of the two assistants there, gave her a hug. "My sister, Henrietta", she said. Then to her sister, "Hen, these are the four I've been telling you about."

"I didn't believe you, but they really are beautiful. Whoops, sorry, shouldn't talk like that. What can we do for you? I guess you want some shoes", grinning.

Holly spoke to her. "It's for their funeral outfits. We're doing their dresses, they will be amazing, but they need shoes to go with them. I think matt black leather, not high healed, but a bit more than flat. Lightweight, we don't want clodhoppers. Toes a little pointed, but the ends rounded. Slip‑ons, but with a strap." An aside to the girls, "To go with the chokers."

Henrietta nodded, went to her colleague, had a word. Turning back, "We'll see what we can find, sit yourselves down."

They emerged from the back with half a dozen pairs of shoes. To Holly, "Any of these?" Holly had a quick look at them, and positively grabbed one. "This one. Perfect."

"Good, let's do some measuring." She put each of their feet on a fitting stool, carefully measured lengths and widths. "Let me see what we have, we'll probably have to order some, but that won't take long."

After some sounds of rummaging and a shoebox or two falling, both assistants came out. "We're in real luck, I think we have them all. To have two of the one size is very unusual. Let's see if they fit."

Within seconds, all were wearing the black shoes. "Walk around in them, make sure they will be comfortable for a while. I know a girl has to suffer to be beautiful, but we should keep that to a minimum."

They walked around, Holly, Henrietta and the other assistant were looking on. Henrietta muttered "What a walk, so natural, but so … sexy?"

Holly said "Shoes." Then "How are they?" Kitty said "They feel fine." Chloe: "Good." Midge and Molly, together: "They feel perfect."

Midge: "We'll have them, thank you." Holly: "Don't wear them now, we'll show Rachel, but I don't want any risk of them being spoilt. This has got to be just right."

Midge paid for them with her card. With hugs all round, they walked out holding their boxes. Back at Rachel's, they went into the workroom. She said "Show me."

All four slipped them on, did up the strap. "Molly, drop your dress." Molly obliged. Rachel got a piece of the material, put Molly facing a full‑length mirror. She stood behind Molly, held the material round Molly, the lower edge half‑way up Molly's thighs. "Perfect. Holly, you have your uses.

"Now, have a look at this neckline." She showed them a mannequin on which she'd mocked up a round neck, trimmed with lace. The twins looked at it, looked at each other, then Midge said "That's gorgeous." Molly: "It works really well."

Rachel said "I'll make the backs rounded to match." The twins nodded, Midge: "That sounds good."

"Right. Holly: stay. The rest of you: go." As the girls moved toward the door, "Molly, pick your dress up, I don't want it left here." Molly grinned, picked it up, slipped it on. Rachel smiled, and, quietly to herself, "These are going to be trouble."

Just as they finished, Midge's phone rang. It was Rachel, "Can you come in, we're getting somewhere."

The girls ran to the shop, they were excited about what Rachel had to show them. Bursting into the shop, Holly greeted them, simply pointed to the workroom, all four tried to go through at once. Laughing, they sorted themselves out, and went in.

Rachel couldn't help but grin at their antics. Then, straight down to business. "Kitty, dress off." Kitty obliged. Rachel picked up a black dress from the table behind her. "Let's try this on you."

"Listen, with the round neck, I've taken it upon myself to lower the neckline a bit, this way the tops of the breasts remain just visible, but there's a little more cleavage."

The dress had to go on over her head, Kitty put her arms up, Rachel lifted it over, guided Kitty's hands through the armholes, carefully lowered it. She smoothed the skirt over Kitty's hips, found the zip, pulled it up slowly, all the time making sure it was in the right place and fitting well.

She stood back, the other three girls were staring, open‑mouthed.

"Holly!" Rachel almost screamed. Holly rushed in, started to say "What's wro…" She stopped in her tracks, just stared.

"Beautiful" from Midge and Molly. Chloe couldn't speak. Rachel wheeled up a full‑length mirror so Kitty could see herself. Kitty stared, ran her hands down her sides to her hips, felt in front from below her tummy right up to her breasts. She turned sideway to the mirror, ran her hands up over her breasts, cupping them. Put her fingers in her cleavage, ran them out a little, feeling along the tops of her breasts. She moved her hands outwards, then down, over her bottom, following its curve to the backs of her thighs.

The dress barely moved under her hands, it followed every contour.

Rachel got a large hand‑held mirror, without a word she held it up so that Kitty could turn her back to the full length one, see herself from behind. She ran her hand down her side, from just under her arms down to her waist, over her hip, behind her bottom, pressed gently into the crack. She could see the neckline behind going halfway down her back.

Kitty turned to face the mirror, ran her fingers behind the material along the neckline, then round the armholes.

She was crying now, so was Rachel. Holly, too, was awestruck.

Rachel put the mirror down. Trying to get business‑like, "What do you think?"

Kitty: "I don't have the words. It looks amazing, it feels like a million dollars."

Rachel asked Kitty to walk. Kitty went round the room, She swayed her hips a little, couldn't help herself.

Midge and Molly said in unison, "Perfect."

Rachel was looking at the slit, it did just what she wanted, Kitty's thigh perfectly hidden when standing still, showing but not overly obtrusive when she walked.

Rachel asked Kitty to come to her. "Bend forward from the waist." Rachel checked the neck line, the dress barely moved from her front, at a funeral that would be very unseemly. "Turn round, bend again." Rachel watched the hem at the back. The material stretched, preventing it from rising more than a smidgen.

Rachel: "You may have to be careful the shoulders don't slip, there's no support from the front or back, so no gymnastics. But I can't find anything wrong. Your beauty, the dress, made for each other. Thank you so much for letting me do this."

All the girls were speechless. Kitty finally broke the silence. "One down, three to go. If the others are anything like mine, wow." She stopped admiring herself, went to Rachel, hugged her as hard as she could. "Thank you so much."

Rachel pulled herself out of her near trance. "Let's take it off you, I just need to check all the seams in case there's any weakness. And you can't keep it on." Kitty put on a fake pout, said to Rachel, "You'd better help me take it off."

Ten minutes later, the girls left the shop.

Two days later Rachel phoned to ask them to come in. They positively sprinted the whole way, burst in, without stopping they rushed into the workroom.

"You were quick" from Rachel. "I hope it's worthwhile. Midge or Molly, I don't care which, it's your turn."

The two looked at each other. Both wanted the other to try it, whether being nice, or wanting to get a better view isn't clear. Maybe a bit of both. Chloe knew how to break the impasse. "Rock, paper, scissors, the winner tries the dress."

Maybe not such a great idea, did we mention they always thought alike? It took seven goes before their tries were different. At least, Kitty thought it was seven, she had difficulty counting, they did it so quickly it only took about two seconds to do them all.

The winner, let's say Midge, took off her dress. Rachel lifted the new dress from her workbench, helped Midge put it on and did the zip up. Like the first dress, it just seemed right. As Kitty did before, Midge ran her hands all over. Whilst not smooth over the lace areas, it did follow every curve, narrowing at the waist, spreading over her hips.

She looked in the long mirror, splayed her fingers over her navel, clearly visible through the black lace.

Rachel held the hand mirror for her, Midge looked with her back to the long mirror, rubbed her hands over her bottom, pleased with the result.

None of them could fault it. Even Rachel's bending and walking tests were good.

Rachel checked the neckline, making sure the lace stayed where it should. There was a hint of Midge's cleavage through the lace, but not blatant. The material over her breasts went above her nipples, no risk of them showing through the lace.

Rachel got out Kitty's dress. "Put yours on, let's see them together."

Kitty eagerly dropped her own dress, Rachel helped her put on her new one. The two stood beside each other, looking in the long mirror.

"Holly" called Rachel, Holly came in, stared at the pair. As if in a dance, both rotated slowly, everyone could compare the two dresses from every angle. After that, one stood still, the other rotated, they continued moving with each other, around each other, in opposite directions.

Rachel suggested they both walk, both in step and out of step. Rachel was once again in tears. Then Midge said "Can my sister try it on?" "Of course, let's get you out of it, we can slip it straight on her."

They swapped over. There was no difference in what the others saw, of course, but it let the other twin feel it, the first to see it on her.

After another few minutes, Rachel said "One test we forgot before. Both of you, sit on the settee."

They did so. The dresses rode up quite a way, the skirt fell open at the split, revealing a lot of leg.

Rachel started to frown, "Maybe too much?" Midge answered. "As we said before, we are showing people what Mummy and Daddy produced. Yes, it shows a lot. It's not indecent."

Rachel was about to ask 'In whose eyes?' but thought better of it. The girls were clearly happy, she was only thinking of the funeral context, she really liked what she saw. She did add "Promise me you'll keep your legs together when you are sitting." Nods.

Molly summed up all of their thoughts. "Absolutely gorgeous. Perfect. Rachel, you are good."

Rachel said almost to herself, "It's not me, it's you girls."

Then "That's enough. Dresses off, we've two more to make."

Rachel and Holly helped them out of the dresses. "You will have to be careful putting them on and taking them off. They can't be abused like everyday clothes."

All four girls nodded. "Don't worry", said Molly, "We'll be careful. We really, really don't want to spoil them."

"Now, off you go, Holly and I have work to do."

Inevitably, more hugs and thankyous. As the girls went out, Kitty suggested they call in at the jeweller's. They went in, he was there apparently polishing some of their letters.

"Hello, good to see you again. I've done all of Kitty, Chloe and Midge, but Molly's being a little difficult."

"Nothing new there, then" from Chloe.

"Don't worry. She didn't go as I wanted, I think she was a little too hot."

All four girls almost collapsed with laughter. Recovering a bit, Molly went to the jeweller, "I'm often said to be a little too hot." She put her hands together high above her head. She moved them to one side, starting a sinuous wave that ran down her arms, through shoulders, chest, torso, waist, down to her hips.

The poor man dropped the letter he was polishing, luckily it fell into the deep pocket in the front of his apron.

Kitty and Chloe's mouths dropped open, they'd never seen this. Midge had seen her sister do this before, and of course she could do it herself, but it was still very impressive to watch.

Molly put her arms down, grinning at his reaction. He muttered, "I thought my silver was a little hot." Then, addressed to the girls, "Okay, I give in, that was much hotter than my silver. But my silver was still just a little too hot."

He showed them how he'd chosen to make four moulds, one with each name spelt out, each letter in its own section, the sections joined by channels. When he poured the silver in, it ran right across, filled all the letters in one go. When hardened, he could cut off the joining silver, grind and polish the rough bits. Kitty appeared to be fascinated. She asked "What about stitching them on?"

"That is the tricky bit. What I will do is use a grinding wheel to cut into the silver, not quite reaching the edges. Using various grinding bits I can make a flat above and below my arc, lay a thin sheet of silver in that, solder it in place. This leaves a place where cotton can be threaded through, but the back is flat. I've talked with Rachel, she's happy with this. She has a curved needle that allows for easy threading. The letters lie flat, no sign of stitches.

"I'll have them finished probably tomorrow. Unless, of course, she comes over all hot again."

This time it was Midge who put her hands high above her head. "No" he yelled, clamping his eyes shut. The girls quietly left, so that when he opened his eyes it was to an empty shop. He shook his head, retrieved the letter he was polishing, continued. But he can't help smiling as he muttered to himself, "Old, but not dead."

Outside the shop the girls were laughing, but by the time they reach the house, they were serious again. Midge opened the door, she and Molly called out, "Hello, we're back" as they would normally have done. None of them made any comment. The twins went into the dining room, then into the kitchen. "They're fine" said Molly.

They make an effort, cooked some mince in a frying pan, put in chopped‑up vegetables, an onion, a crushed clove of garlic, tin of tomatoes, some pepper, a couple of bay leaves. In another pan they boiled water, cooked some spaghetti.

They served it up on plates, ate it in the kitchen. At one stage, Molly looked up at Midge, sucked a long strand of spaghetti into her mouth so the end flicked, an obvious invitation to play. Midge said quietly, "No, they wouldn't like it." "Never stopped us before." "It's different now." "You're right."

Kitty and Chloe were surprised at the ever so slight difference of opinion between them. Midge spotted this, "Don't worry, we're not arguing, just trying to understand where we are." Molly nodded, nothing more to be said.

They finished eating, put the pans to soak, took tea into the sitting room, sat drinking, talked quietly about the dresses and their silver names, they managed to grin at Molly's snake impression.

After a while, they went back into the kitchen, between them they did the washing up, put everything away, made sure the kitchen was clean.

When they had finished, Midge stopped them from leaving the kitchen. "I was looking round, remembered the cellar." She indicated a door that led under the hall stairs. "Daddy keeps his wine down there. Kitty, Chloe, we can't have that there. Make sure we ask Daniel to take it away." Midge nodded, "We daren't leave it there. It's too dangerous."

Chloe started to whimper, Midge put her arm round her. "Don't worry, nothing will happen while Mummy and Daddy are here."

They went upstairs, showered together. Chloe was the first to be dry. "Will they mind us being in their bed?" she asked quietly. "No, not at all." from Midge. "We were always getting into their bed, often slept there" from Molly. Midge continued "They sometimes didn't want us there while they played together." "At least, that's what they called it."

Midge grabbed Chloe's hand, Molly got Kitty's, pulled them into the bed, threw themselves every which way, they were all asleep in minutes.

The next day, after breakfast, Chloe phoned Daniel, told him that they wanted the wine out of the house, today if possible. Daniel didn't ask why, but sensed the urgency in Chloe's voice. He said "I'll get Samuel to come round, he's a bit of a wine buff." "Can you get him to phone first, in case we are out?" "Yes, I'll do that."

Minutes later, Samuel phoned Midge. "I can be round in ten minutes." When he arrived, they let him in and led him to the cellar, but none of the girls would go down. He was a bit puzzled, but said nothing. He found the light switch, went down, had a brief look round. He came up, "Your father had good taste. There's quite a bit. I'll pay you what they are worth. "No" the twins said in unison, and ran out of the kitchen. Samuel was a little taken aback. Chloe said "Please, just take them." Kitty: "That is payment enough."

"All right, I can see you mean it. I'll start bringing them up."

"Please, can you take them from the cellar straight to the car? I know it will take a little longer, but we don't want to risk them put down here."

"As you wish", though he didn't understand why.

He took the crates out, surprised that the girls weren't watching, Kitty and Chloe had also left the kitchen. When he'd finished, he found them all in the dining room. As he came in, he saw the coffins. He stood up straight, bowed his head for a moment. Turning to the girls, He said "All in the car." At this, all four girls seem to cheer up. "Thank you", this time all four spoke in unison.

They saw him to the door, each gave him a peck on the cheek. Chloe went with him to his car, she quietly said to him "One day we'll tell you why, but not now." "I can tell it was something traumatic. Look, I don't need to know, but I will always listen." He held her hand for a moment, bent down, kissed the top of her head, got in his car and drove off.

On the day of the funeral, the four girls woke early, stayed in bed for a while, each with her own thoughts. They showered together, washing each other.

They went downstairs, the twins checking in on their parents, then joined the others in the kitchen. Scrambled egg on toast, and tea, in total silence. This time Midge and Molly insisted they did the washing up, put everything away, made the kitchen as tidy as they could. Kitty and Chloe tidied the sitting room, seemed like the right thing to do.

They went upstairs, one at a time they sat at the dressing table while the other three each took turns to brush the seated one's hair with their mother's hairbrush, getting every knot and tangle out, until all four had glistening hair hanging well down their backs. "We often did that for Mummy."

They'd arranged for Rachel to come to their house to help them put their dresses on, she came with Holly an hour before the funeral. They put them on in the sitting room, Holly put their shoes on for them. Midge and Molly went into the dining room, in unison they said "How do we look?", gave a twirl. They came back into the sitting room, "Mummy loves them." "Daddy tutted a little," "but didn't say" "we couldn't wear them."

After one last look at the dresses, Rachel and Holly left, leaving the girls sitting in the dining room. Midge and Molly were insistent that the coffins shouldn't be separated, they'd hoped they could have sat in the large hearse with them, but impractical with the pallbearers needed. So they'd asked to walk behind the hearse to the crematorium, where the service was to be held. This had been okayed by the council and the police.

The hearse arrived, the pallbearers took the first coffin, Midge following it to the hearse. Molly stayed with the second, then followed when that was taken.

The director went to the four girls, asked if they were ready, they nodded. The hearse moved off the drive and onto the road, the girls followed in line across, Chloe, Midge, Molly and Kitty, all holding hands, silent, just staring at the back of the hearse as they walked. Behind the girls, the cars of Daniel and Samuel followed. There were many neighbours lining the street, complete silence, except for an occasional gasp as the girls were seen. As the cortege went by, most of the onlookers joined, walking behind.

Two police motorcyclists were escorting, they rode ahead of the hearse, making sure the road was clear, stopping any crossing traffic. As one stopped, the other would go ahead to the next possible holdup.

It was about a mile to the crematorium where the service would take place, it took twenty minutes to reach it. There were already many people waiting. The hearse stopped, the pallbearers lifted the coffins onto their shoulders, the coffins were taken in side by side. It wasn't easy getting through the doors like that, but they managed. Midge and Molly walked behind the coffins, Kitty and Chloe a few steps behind them.

When they reached the staging area, the coffins were placed on catafalques to one side, the pallbearers stood back, bowed and left. The girls sat in the front row of seats on the same side as the coffins, Midge and Molly together, Chloe and Kitty either side. Audrey sat next to Kitty, Daniel beside her, Natalie sat next to Chloe, then Samuel. At the back of the stage was seated a celebrant, a lady dressed in a lilac‑coloured suit.

There was music coming from loudspeakers, Chopin piano pieces, the twins had chosen these because their parents would listen to them when relaxing at home.

It took a while for people to come in, find seats. So many had turned up that a lot had to remain standing, lining the side gangways. While people were still coming in, Midge and Molly went to the stage, beckoned the celebrant. They had a short conversation, after which they returned to their seats.

When all were settled, the celebrant stood and walked to the front of the stage.

She welcomed the people, told them that this was an unusual ceremony, but that's what their daughters wanted. She said it would be short, and she would start off by introducing a family friend, Daniel, who would give a eulogy.

Daniel stood up, went on to the stage, followed by the four girls. Molly and Midge stood side by side a bit behind Daniel, Chloe and Kitty stood one either side of the twins, a step further back.

Daniel started by introducing himself. He continued, saying that Clive and Amelia were well known for the work they did, helping people who were less fortunate, both here and in other countries. He named some of the charities they worked for, also that they would go on their own to wherever help might be needed. He listed countries they'd been in, examples of the direct help they'd given. They had died while doing their work.

He finished the eulogy by saying, that in his opinion, the best work they'd ever achieved was to produce and bring up their daughters, he indicated Midge and Molly.

Finally he said "Something the girls didn't know I would say. If anyone thinks they are dressed in any way disrespectfully, they are very wrong. On the contrary, the daughters wanted people to see what their parents have produced. If you think they are showing off their bodies, you are absolutely correct. It is their tribute."

Midge and Molly were looking at him, but remained expressionless except for very moist eyes, standing hand in hand.

The girls stayed where they were, Daniel went back to his seat.

After a few seconds, the celebrant came forward. She said "Molly and Midge would like to say a few words. They asked that they are allowed to say what they want, that no one tries to come to them, whatever happens. They are adamant about this, they emphasised whatever happens, so I ask everyone to respect their wishes."

She went to the back of the stage and sat down again.

Audrey grabbed Daniel's arm, said quietly to him "Oh my god, I don't like this." He put his other hand over hers, said "I hope you're wrong." She'd earlier told him about the ladies' toilet at the airport.

Midge and Molly moved forward, Midge began, "Thank you all for coming, we never" "expected so many." They'd started their alternating speaking, though just by listening you couldn't tell.

"We regret the wake" "couldn't be for everyone," "we've had to limit" "it to just" "a few of you," "please don't think" "you are not" "appreciated as" "their friends and" "colleagues."

"We would like" "to simply tell" "you about our" "parents and" "us."

They move to the coffins, Midge put a hand on one coffin, Molly put one of hers on the other.

"Mummy," "Daddy" then in unison "We love you, and you loved us."

"We were always naughty" said one, and in unison\t

     "And still you loved us."

They alternated saying what they did wrong, but chorused the second part.

"As babies, we cried when you wanted to sleep"

     "And still you loved us."

"We wouldn't wear what you wanted us to"

     "And still you loved us."

"We made messes in you kitchen"

     "And still you loved us.,"

"We messed up your office"

     "And still you loved us."

"We refused to wear our shoes to go to school"

     "And still you loved us."

Both the twins were crying, clearly very distressed. Kitty and Chloe weren't looking at them, they were looking round in case anyone started to come up to them.

"We ran amok round the house"

     "And still you loved us."

"We ran amok in shops"

     "And still you loved us."

"We hid your car keys" "We hid your passports"

     "And still you loved us."

"We made the neighbours complain about us to you"

     "And still you loved us."

By now, the twins were kneeling, still touching the coffins.

"We would embarrass you when you had friends round"

     "And still you loved us."

"We spoilt your evenings out."

     "And still you loved us."

"We were horrible" "disobedient" "rotten" "nasty" "vicious" "dreadful"

     "And still you loved us."

By now, the two were crouching on the floor. They grasped each other and shouted at the coffins, "But we always loved you, we always will."

They collapsed completely, writhing, then they stood up. They started punching each other, they'd punch in turn. Never attempting to dodge or block a punch. Chest, arms, back, they were crying, howling, all the while.

The celebrant got up, started towards them. Chloe immediately blocked her path, "No, remember what they said." "But they're hurting each other."

Daniel had to hold Audrey to stop her getting up, after the first few punches she just buried her head in Daniel's chest, Natalie was doing the same with Samuel.

Meanwhile a few got up from the congregation, started onto the stage. Kitty and Chloe tried to fend them off, but couldn't stop them all. One man reached them, went to pull them apart. Their reaction was immediate, they both turned on him, both pushed him in the chest, said "Leave" "us alone". The man staggered back, clutching his chest, fell onto his knees. Chloe went to him, she asked if he was okay, he managed to nod, mouthed 'Just winded'. Chloe said to him she was sorry, but people were asked not to go to them.

When he'd recovered a bit, he helped Chloe and Kitty fend off several more who wanted to intervene.

After a few more punches to the bodies between the twins, Midge gave Molly a powerful blow to the belly, Molly staggered back, fell to the floor, clutching herself. Several in the congregation cried out. From the floor, Molly looked up at Midge, smiled, reached out a hand. Molly got hold of her hand, helped her up. Without letting go, Molly gave Midge a similar punch to Midge's stomach, she also went down, pulling Molly with her. They hugged each other as they lay. After maybe twenty seconds they helped each other to their feet, gave each other a long, deep kiss. They staggered to one of the coffins, both looked at it, touched it, both said "We love you, Mummy". They turned to the second, touched it, "We love you, Daddy".

They hugged and sobbed. Kitty and Chloe felt safe to approach them, Kitty pulled one of Molly's dress shoulder straps up, it had fallen off. The four walked off the stage, but before going to their seats, Chloe pointed out the man they'd winded. They went to him, both said they were sorry, no one else was supposed to get hurt. He said they weren't to worry, it was his own fault for not doing what he was told. Molly managed a smile, "Something we have in common." They gave him a brief hug, then went to their seats.

The whole room was in absolute silence, except for the sound of a piano.

The celebrant went to the front of the stage. Somewhat shakily, she made the announcement that the interment would be private, and that they were sorry, but only those with invitations could go to the wake. Meanwhile, could people please remain in their seats until the stage had been cleared?

The pallbearers came. They picked up the coffins, waited until those going to the interment were ready. They walked out, followed by Midge, Molly, Chloe and Kitty, then Daniel and Audrey, Samuel and Natalie, the celebrant took up the rear. The coffins were put in the hearse, it drove slowly to the churchyard, one corner of which was reserved for non‑Christians, the hearse was followed on foot by the party.

They watched in silence as their father's coffin was lowered. Midge and Molly went to the men who were doing the lowering, asked that their mother was put face down, "That's how she always slept." The men looked at the celebrant, she nodded, they lifted it from the ropes, carefully turned the coffin over, back onto the ropes, lowered it. Midge and Molly stepped forward, both picked up a handful of soil, sprinkled it into the grave. They took off each others' chokers, tossed them in, "You never could tell us apart." "We hope these will help."

They watched while the grave diggers put in a few shovelfuls of soil. Hand in hand they turned back towards the town, tears streaming down their faces. They seemed totally unaware of anyone else, they even walked right by Chloe and Kitty without a glance.

Kitty went to the celebrant, "They want you to come to the wake, please will you?" "I don't normally, but none of this has been normal. Are you sure? They're not just being polite?" "We're sure."

They followed on, the party had got spread out. Midge and Molly were walking as fast as their dresses would allow. It took them a while to reach the hotel, they found Rachel inside. "I have to inspect your dresses, they took quite a beating." The two stopped, Rachel had just started to look when Kitty arrived, she said "Daniel has a room booked we can use, we all need to tidy ourselves up." They went to the hotel reception, Daniel was already at the desk getting the key. The four girls Rachel and Holly went with him to the room, he opened its door. "I'll hang on to the key, you girls have nowhere to keep it." He turned, left them to it.

Inside, Rachel produced a hairbrush from her handbag, passed it to Kitty. "Do Molly's hair while I check on Midge's dress." Neither of them knew which twin was which, but it didn't matter. Rachel took Midge's hand, gently said to her, "Come on, let me do this." Reluctantly the twins let go of each other's hand, Molly sat at the dressing table, she was looking in the mirror at Midge. Midge was standing facing Molly, never taking her eyes off her, but Rachel could move round her to check every seam.

When Rachel got to the skirt's slit, she found it was split up higher, the lower stitching had pulled right out, and loosened higher up. Rachel took a look at how far up it had gone, smiled to herself, pulled out the loose cotton, left the extra slit, but put a few stitches above it to stop any more stitches undoing.

She took Midge's hand, led her to the dressing table, took Molly's hand, lifted it. Molly stood, Rachel led her away, meanwhile Chloe sat Midge down, took the hairbrush from Kitty, set about Midge's hair.

Rachel found exactly the same splitting as was on Midge's dress, but it had gone even higher. Rachel looked at Molly, smiled a bit more, again left the slit to where it had reached, just stitched it there.

When she'd finished sewing, Rachel sat on the bed beside Molly until Chloe was satisfied with Midge's hair. Chloe led Midge to the bed to sit beside Molly, the twins embraced, just sat there, gently crying. Kitty and Chloe did each other's hair as quickly as possible, Rachel was sitting on the bed a little away from the twins.

When they'd done, Kitty and Chloe came over, Kitty handed the hairbrush back to Rachel, she said "Thank you". Kitty and Chloe led the very passive Molly and Midge into the bathroom. They came out a few minutes later, Midge and Molly seemed to be a bit better, both gave Rachel a kiss and a thankyou. Rachel smiled, she told them to go to the wake, she'll use the bathroom and come down afterwards.

The four walked down the hotel stairs, went into the function room where people are holding glasses of something bubbly, though non-alcoholic, the twins had specified no alcohol. There was a piano in one corner, a girl was sitting at it, quietly playing classical pieces.

A buffet was set out, a couple of hotel waitresses and a waiter were there. As the girls entered the room, there was a hush, only the piano music. Molly, looking around, said "Come on, this is a celebration", though neither twin looked like they were celebrating.

Immediately two couples went up to the girls, they were the neighbours who had been to the house a few days before. The wives were first to give Molly and Midge hugs, but neither could say anything. The husbands went to Kitty and Chloe, one quietly asked if the twins were all right. "Honestly?" from Kitty. "We don't know. All we can say is they are controlling themselves. With their parents gone, there's now no one closer to them than us, but we can't tell."

Chloe added "We will have to watch them, anything could happen, but I think they're okay."

When they were released from the wives, the twins started circulating, just speaking with those they didn't know so well, hugs for those they did. Daniel and Samuel got full‑on kisses, Audrey and Natalie just smiled, they both had strong mothering instincts, wanted the girls to be happy. Natalie went to Kitty and Chloe, she gave them both a hug, "You're looking after them I gather." Chloe replied "As best we can."

The twins found the celebrant, went to her, she got a double hug. "We're sorry to have caused a bit of a rumpus, it just sort of happened."

She responded "Look, there's nothing to be sorry for, but at the time some of it was alarming, I didn't know what to expect." "Nor did we." "What I will say is I've never seen a service like it, and in its own way, it was beautiful. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I am glad it went the way it did."

More hugs, thankyous.

The jeweller was there with his wife, the twins went up to them as they were moving away from the celebrant. He smiled at them, said to his wife "These are two of them. The other two are just behind." The twins give him a hug, then his wife. She was as old as him, but spritely, she said "He couldn't stop talking about you. I was getting worried he might be leaving me." The twins gave each other a glance, both stood up straight, put their hands together, stretched their arms right up. "Please, no, don't, or I definitely will leave her." They put their arms down. From Midge "Maybe another time."

He was looking at their necks. "You aren't wearing your chokers, the other two are. Is there something wrong with them?" "No, they" "were perfect" "but we" "gave them" "to Mummy" and Daddy." "They could" "never tell" "which of " "us" "was" "which."

At that they burst into tears, one hugging the jeweller, the other his wife. As quickly as they started crying, they stopped, pulled back, smiled, repeated "They were perfect, thank you."

"Would you like me to make some more?" "Thank you, no. Even we don't know which of us is which." "So it would be wrong to have people think we did."

He turned to his wife,"See, I told you they were unusual." His wife said "I didn't believe how beautiful you said they were." She turned to the twins, "Look, in a while, I'd like you, the two of you or preferably all four, to come and visit us. We had some children of our own, but they've gone. Some nice young people in the house again would be lovely. I'm serious, not just being polite."

The twins looked at each other, "We'd love to." "But not for a while."

The jeweller smiled, "I'd like that too, but you'll have to behave yourselves, I could keel over so easily."

Midge and Molly found Rachel and Holly, both of them got a hug from both of the twins. "These dresses are perfect." Rachel replied "They did suffer just a little, you're probably showing a bit more leg than you were." The twins looked at each other, both raised a leg to allow the split to open, "We still think they are perfect. This is a celebration now."

Within half an hour, things were relaxing to the point that Midge and Molly had separated, though they were occasionally glancing to make sure each knew where the other was. Kitty was never more than a few steps from Molly, Chloe was keeping near Midge, but all the while they were chatting.

With the twins, people were talking about their parents, little stories about them, how they always talked about their twin daughters, always with love, pride, and a lot of exasperation, which always got a smile out of whichever twin it was, and a comment like "We were very trying for them" or "We never knew how they put up with us."

None of the girls were eating, Midge and Molly needed both hands and arms for the hugs they kept giving. Kitty and Chloe didn't dare get distracted.

Daniel noticed how Kitty and Chloe were behaving, At one stage he and Audrey went to Kitty, Daniel asked "What's the matter? Why are you watching them so closely?" Kitty looked down, shook her head as she thought what to say. She tried to put her feelings into words. "I have no idea what's going on in their minds. We know they are really grieving inside, putting on a brave face for everyone else. What we don't know is when or how they might react."

Audrey: "You mean, like at the funeral, or …" she hesitated "… at the airport?"

Kitty: "Possibly. They didn't tell us what they did at the airport, but we can guess from their marks and blood on their clothes. When they are in some sort of distress they will sometimes take it out on each other. I don't really understand it, but if they hurt the other, they are hurting themselves. I suppose it's some sort of self harm."

Audrey: "Can't they be helped?"

Kitty: "The simple answer is no. They don't want help, they are very happy with their relationship with each other as it is."

Daniel: "But I can see that's not your only worry."

Kitty: "What would be much more worrying is if they took out their feelings on someone else. They themselves are remarkably strong, can survive almost anything. They could very easily kill someone else."

Daniel: "If what you say is true, aren't you worried for Chloe and yourself?"

Kitty, barely audibly: "I would gladly give my life for them or to them. If they want to kill me, they are very welcome to." She turned away, crying.

Audrey went after her, hugged her, let her cry herself out.

Kitty pulled herself from the hug. Perking up, she said "Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Where's she gone now? Oh, I see her. Excuse me." She moved off to get closer to Molly.

A little later, there was a disturbance just inside the room's entrance. Four young men had barged just inside the door, demanding to be let in. The waiter was trying to stop them, he was being roughly pushed. Midge was close to the door, as she stepped towards it, she whispered "Molly".

Molly, the other end of the room, looked up, saw Midge going towards the fracas. She was straight away running there, but having to dodge round guests, Kitty following Molly as best she could.

Midge, without hesitation, pushed herself between the waiter and the man who was trying to get past him. The man was somewhat taken aback, then put on a big grin, "Girls as well as booze, great."

Midge raised her arm, pointed to the door, said "Out."

He laughed at her, "No chance."

He started to put his arms round her, went to give her a kiss. Her response was to bite his lower lip, hard. He screamed, he fell to the floor holding his face, blood running from under his hands. Midge spat something out of her mouth.

Another of the men took a step towards Midge, took a swing at her. She didn't try to dodge, took the full blow on her shoulder. It knocked her backwards, she only just managed to stay upright. Without a change of expression, but with one arm dangling uselessly at her side, she used her other arm to punch the man hard. He, too, went down, clutching his stomach.

When Midge was hit, Molly, part way to Midge, collapsed on the floor gripping her shoulder. She grimaced, but got up, continued until she got to Midge. She looked at Midge's useless arm, just lightly touched the shoulder where it was punched, said "Mine, now." "No," said Midge, "only when I'm down." Molly stepped back.

A third man went for Midge, She dodged his punch, grabbed his wrist with her good hand. She twisted it, pulled it down, raised her knee. There was an audible crack as his arm hit her knee. He went down, holding his broken arm. Molly gave a satisfied nod, muttered "Good on you, sis."

Number four started towards Midge. He'd taken out a knife. Molly loudly said "No kill". Midge gave a brief nod, and just waited for him. He lunged towards her, knife aimed for her stomach. At the last moment, she dodged to one side, grabbed his wrist with her good hand, and with pure strength she forced it round until the point was touching his stomach. She pushed the tip through his shirt, a little blood started seeping onto it.

Molly repeated, quietly, "No kill."

Midge took her hand off his wrist, he dropped the knife, turned and ran.

The whole episode took well under a minute.

Molly went to Midge, kissed her, being careful not to touch her shoulder or arm.

Around, most were just staring. After a few seconds of silence, there was a hubbub, everyone nearby talking about what they've just seen. The waiter was standing there, stunned. Someone had called for an ambulance and the police, two policemen were there within five minutes. They came in, one checked on the three on the ground, looked up, "Who did this?" Midge steps forward. "They attacked me." The policemen looked around, no one else said anything, he clearly didn't believe it.

The other policeman got up, "Not life threatening, but at least two need hospital treatment …" He broke off as he saw Midge standing there. "You", he said. "I know you." He turned to his partner. "If she said she did it, then she did. I've met the two of them before."

The partner said "Don't believe it." The waiter, out of his stupor, said "It's true, I've never seen anything like it. We have a security camera pointing to the door, there should be a recording.

Midge was still just standing there. Molly had put herself to guard Midge's bad arm, she didn't want anyone touching it. Midge was holding it against her side with her other hand

The ambulance came, checked the three on the floor. "All to hospital, we'll need another ambulance." At this, he looked up, saw the twins. "You two. Oh, I heard"  referring to their parents  "I'm so sorry." He went to give them a hug, Molly shouted "No. She's hurt." The ambulance man stopped in his tracks, "Show me".

Molly pointed to Midge's shoulder. Where it was visible it was swelling. Molly very carefully lifted the strap up and off Midge's shoulder. The shoulder was already very swollen, it had turned black.

The ambulance shouted to his partner, "Fuck them. She has to go in. Now."

They ignored the policemen's protests. One of them held Midge's good hand, started to gently lead her out. Molly started to follow, but Kitty went to her, "I'll look after her, you stay, this is for your parents." Midge turned, "She's right. I'll be safe with Kitty. I'll be back later, you look after our friends." This was a surprising audible sentence between them, but separating like this was very unusual. Molly reluctantly agreed.

Midge was led into the ambulance. Kitty made to climb in. The other medic started to protest, the looks he got from his partner, from Midge and from Kitty made him stop any argument.

His partner went to the driver's seat, he stayed in the back, he sat them down. Midge refused to lie down, the two girls just sat together, Kitty guarding Midge's arm. He offered Midge gas and air for the pain. Although she wasn't showing any signs, he knew it must be excruciating, but she refused. He shook his head, then called to the driver "Blues and twos, but gently, they're just sitting."

Very soon they were at the hospital. Midge was greeted by many of the staff, she was well known there. Somehow the word of her arm had spread, no one went to give her the customary hug, but she did get a few kisses on her forehead or to the top of her head.

In A&E, she was straight away taken for an X‑ray. Normally non‑medical personnel wouldn't be allowed, but Kitty was made welcome. The only time she was separated from Midge was when the actual X‑ray was taken, but Kitty was the last to leave the X‑ray room, first back to Midge.

Immediately afterwards, Midge was taken for an MRI scan to look for soft tissue damage, same response by Kitty, last out, first in.

After that they were taken to an unoccupied room, Midge was being given very special treatment. Quarter of an hour later, a doctor came in, he was holding a laptop computer, on it was the X‑ray image of Midge's shoulder.

He started by saying, "Last time I saw you must have been ten years ago. You'd either fallen out of a tree or jumped out of it. Never knew which of you was which then, don't now." This got a smile from Midge, she managed to say, "Sorry, but I don't remember you, we were having too much fun here." He glanced at Kitty, raised a querying eyebrow. Midge said "This is Kitty, she's my bestest friend." She winked at Kitty, then added "Unless Chloe is with me, then she's my bestest." "Well, bestest friend, the two of them caused chaos around here, As soon as their plasters were on, they were running round everywhere, couldn't stop them. Caused mayhem. In spite of that, they cheered the whole place up." He was getting nostalgic. "They seemed to want to go to any patient who was suffering, they'd sit on their bed, talk to them, help them to a drink, help them eat, even though they were, what was it, six? They were wonderful."

Quietly from Kitty, "They still are."

He shook his head. More gently, he said "I'm so sorry about your parents. They did a lot for the community here, but they wouldn't let us tell anyone." Midge started to cry, but the doctor used a bit of distraction therapy. "Look at this." He sat beside Midge (her good side, Kitty was on her bad) and held the laptop in front of her. "Your scapula has a hairline crack, the other bones appear undamaged."

"Anyway," he continued, "that will heal easily by itself so long as it doesn't get any more nasty hits. What's more worrying is the damage around it."

He pulled up an image from the scanner, played a sequence moving through her shoulder. An untrained eye could make nothing of it.

He continued speaking, "You have torn ligaments, badly bruised muscles and burst blood vessels." Then, almost to himself, "You must have taken an enormous hit."

"With almost anyone else, I'd say we would need to operate to get everything back as it should be, but in your case, in my opinion, your quite remarkable healing powers will do a better job that we could. However, and I can't emphasise this enough, I must insist you have a sling to take the weight off your arm, without this your arm will heal but it would be with a deformed shoulder. Two things about that, the first is it wouldn't work properly, you'll have restricted movement. Secondly …" ‑ he grinned ‑ "… we'd be able to tell you and your sister apart." Midge muttered "Then Molly would get punched like I did." "You always were difficult." He turned to Kitty. "Please, make her wear it. I'll get a nurse to come in, show you how." Then to Midge "Now, I'd hug you if I could, let's say we'll have a rain check on that, okay? Meanwhile I'll get an appointment for you to see me in a week."

Midge stood up, her arm still just hanging, she went up to the doctor, took his hand in her good one, said "Thank you, I'll try to be a good girl."

He turned towards the door, and as he was leaving the room he could just be heard muttering "That'll be the day."

A few minutes later, a nurse and another man come in. The nurse knew Midge. "Hello, more wars. I love to see you, but this really isn't the way. Let me introduce you to your physiotherapist."

She did that, he said "Hi". His first look was at the two beauties in front of him, but he rapidly changed his gaze to Midge's arm. He continued "I know you want to get back as soon as possible, but I need to talk to you before you go. I'll wait while nurse puts your sling on."

The nurse nodded to him, then said to Midge: "In a week or so you can have a proper sling, but the doctor wants you to use a triangular bandage first, something about you being a special case. Which you are.

"Okay, Let me do this. Is your arm completely relaxed? But you need to lie down for this, I can't let you put any strain on that arm. Now, lie back, but let me take the weight at the elbow, I'll keep it with your body."

Using her good arm, Midge laid herself down. Even she couldn't suppress a gasp of pain. The nurse looked at Kitty, "She will need help like this for a few days, are you all right with that?" "Yes, certainly" from Kitty, "So long as I am sure I know exactly what you want doing."

"Okay, watch closely. We get the triangular bandage like so, put one corner ready to tie round her neck, the knot will be on her bad side. Lay it across her che …" Then "Oh, my, your dress, it's gorgeous …" she trailed off. "Mustn't be distracted. Lay the bandage across her chest, now the hard part. We have to lift her arm, no stress on her shoulder whatsoever. Midge, keep it relaxed. It will almost certainly hurt, but you mustn't flinch, okay?"

Midge nodded, put her head right back, closed her eyes, her whole body seemed to sag. Kitty said to the nurse, "I've seen her do this, I think you will find you can do anything to her, she won't react, totally limp. She and her sister seem to have learned this as a protection mechanism from people who hurt them."

The nurse looked at her with a frown, then, all business‑like, "Lift her arm, bend the elbow thus, lay it across her chest." She did this as she spoke, Midge's arm was completely relaxed, no resistance to anything. She continued, "Her hand should be slightly above her elbow when standing. The bandage goes over her arm, the corner to the other side of her neck, the knot on her bad side. You can see I've laid the bandage to do this. Pass the long corner behind her neck." The nurse was surprised that Midge's head was just a dead weight on her neck, she had to tip up her head with one hand while feeding the corner of the bandage under her neck with the other. "Now tie it off, don't leave any slack or her arm will drop. Okay. Midge, let's sit you up."

No reaction whatsoever from Midge. The nurse looked at Kitty, Kitty smiled, bent down, whispered something into Midge's ear. Midge's eyes opened. Kitty immediately said "Stay absolutely still. Don't move yet. "To the nurse, "She might not know what just happened, we'll need to tell her not to move her arm by herself until she does." Midge looked around, then realised where she was. She lifted her head enough to look down at her arm in a sling. Midge said "Oh, yes." Then, in a very matter‑of‑fact way, "Did I kill any of them?" The physiotherapist and the nurse both looked a little shocked at this. Kitty said "No, but you did just about frighten them to death." Midge just nodded.

"Right" said the nurse, "let's get you sat up. Midge, just keep your arm totally relaxed, let the bandage support it completely. You may need help sitting up, you're a bit one‑sided."

Midge said "Let me try first."

With a grin, Kitty said to the nurse "She and her sister are cussedly independent." Midge twisted her body onto her good side, simply pushed herself up with her good arm, until she was sitting up. "My god, she's strong" from the nurse. "Okay, with that strength this should be easy. Weight on your good arm, try to balance so your sling doesn't swing, but if it does, Do. Not. Stop. The. Swing. With. Your. Muscles. Put your weight on your good side buttock, turn yourself, feet over the edge."

Midge complied, no swinging of her arm.

"And they said you were difficult. They're all wrong. You are making this easy. Just slide yourself to the floor, gentle landing, be careful, you may feel a little dizzy."

Again, Midge complied, no jarring, no apparent dizziness.

"Okay, I'll wait here while the physio talks to you."

To the nurse the physio said "Thank you."

To Midge: "I've looked at your scans, there is a lot of damage. The doctor tells me you have remarkable recovery powers. That's good, but we need to be careful.

"As you are well aware, healing is best if you can use the affected area, but that mustn't be too soon. You have damaged ligaments, they take a long time to heal, but we will get your shoulder partially working before then, it's essential in order to get full movement back. I will be honest, when I first saw the scans, I thought there would be permanent damage, you never would get full movement.

"But I've looked through your records, talked with a couple of colleagues, from what they say, any other patient who's been through what you have would be a complete wreck in a wheelchair."

Almost to himself, "You and your sister do seem to come in here with some pretty bad trauma, and far too often, over the years."

He turned to Kitty,"You will supervise?" She answered "I will always be with her, I will tell her sister and our other friend everything. We will make sure she's properly looked after." Tears were flowing from her eyes. "We will all …"

"Okay, she'll be looked after, I can see that.

"Right young lady, rules. I've heard you don't follow rules, but this isn't just for fun. One. You don't attempt to use your arm to do anything for at least three days1. However, for the rest of today, wriggle your fingers. Don't do it beyond a bit of discomfort in your shoulder. Can you do it for me now?"

Midge did so, seemingly without pain.

"Good. Now, I've also heard you can ignore a lot of pain. Please pretend you are a normal person in that regard.

"At night, you can take your arm out of the sling so long as it doesn't hurt, so totally relaxed. It's easiest if you are lying down, but you can be standing so long as you can keep you arm completely relaxed and someone supports its weight and straightens the elbow. Any real pain, whoever is helping you must stop, make sure the arm is totally relaxed, make sure the upper arm is in line with your torso. Same applies if you want to sit up or lie down with your sling off.

"It's good to do this occasionally anyway, the inevitable small movement will prevent seizing of the joint, but don't overdo it. If you heal as quickly as your history here suggests, we can do more after I've seen you in a few days.

"Now, initial exercises. These build on each other, day by day, so keep wriggling fingers into the second and third day, and so on.

"Tomorrow, start to move your hand from the wrist, you can try clenching it as a fist. Not to use against anybody, something else I've heard. And, good for you, though I shouldn't say that.

"Day after, still in your sling, see if you can bend you elbow, lift your forearm. Again, a little discomfort is fine, but no real pain. That will come later in your recovery when I give you some proper exercises.

"I want you in here on day four, I'll have to fit you in somehow. It won't be a long session, just to see how you are doing, see if you can do more. Nurse will give you a time.

"That's enough for now, have you got all that?"

Kitty, already laughing, said "Finger wriggling today …" Midge couldn't help but join the laughter, which stopped suddenly, she just said "That hurt".

Therapist: "You've been warned, don't do that. Laughter is the best medicine, but you can have too much of a good thing, especially now. Okay?" Midge nodded, carefully, but still had a grin. Kitty continued, "My interpretation of what you said, she can have the sling off provided it's done with no muscular input from her shoulder or arm, we are to support any movement."

"That is a good summary."

Kitty: "With her sling off, can her arm hang with no other support?"

"That should be okay for a short period, but no longer than, say, twenty minutes, but she mustn't swing it if she walks, it must just hang, I repeat, no muscular input."

Kitty continued, "Hand movement, wrist, possible fist but no punching, elbow bend. No real pain, sling can be off but totally relaxed arm for a short while, in line with her body, deal appropriately if it hurts. A bit of discomfort is allowed."

"You've got it." Directly at Kitty, "Be strict with her. I've heard about her. I am really serious, okay?"

Both Kitty and Midge nodded, both said "Thank you."

The therapist left.

Kitty said "Goody, goody, Kitty can be strict with Midge." As Kitty doubled over with laughter, Midge yelled at her, "Don't do that!"

The nurse, not understanding that Kitty was impersonating Molly, but getting caught up with the 'wriggling' and the 'strict' part, barely managed to suppress her own laughter.

She led them to the discharge station. "Normally you'd be kept in overnight for observation, but the doctor says you would leave as soon as everyone's back is turned anyway. He also said where you came from, you'd want to get back. My deepest condolences."

Midge managed a smile, leant forward, gave the nurse a quick kiss on her cheek. "Thank you."

Kitty asked "Can I phone for someone to pick us up?" "No need, one of the porters has said he will drive you. Totally against regulations, but so's everything else about this one and her sister. I'll get him."

Paperwork completed, appointments made, a porter arrived. Midge recognised him, started as if to run to him. Kitty said "No, mind your arm." Midge lifted her good hand in thanks for the warning, walked to the porter, said "Hi" in a very familiar manner. "Come on" he said, "Let's get you back."

Kitty was surprised when Midge got into the front of the car beside the porter, but didn't comment. She did say to Midge "No seat belt." Both Midge and the porter nodded. With Kitty in the back, Midge carefully half‑turned towards Kitty, said "He's been kind to Molly and me when we've been in before." The way she said that, and the way she looked at him, made Kitty think that 'kind' was probably an understatement. "We call him Fred. Don't know what his real name is."

Fred started to speak, Midge cut him off, "Don't want to know. To us you're 'Fred'."

They arrived back at the hotel, Kitty supervised Midge getting out of the car. Fred got out, Midge said "Thank you" to him, gave him a quick kiss on his mouth. Kitty was sure Midge winked to him as she turned to go into the hotel.

Molly was already waiting at the door, Chloe in attendance. They entered, Midge said "No hug, arm bad." Molly nodded, took her good hand in hers, gave her a full‑on mouth‑to‑mouth, no holds barred, deep kiss that lasted for a full thirty seconds. One or two gasps from those who didn't know the sisters so well, those who did were not surprised. As they parted, they said in unison, "Missed you, sis." They stared into each others' eyes for another few seconds. Both smiled, Molly nodded as if she's been told something in that stare.

Kitty, meanwhile, was talking to Chloe. "She shouldn't really be out of hospital. We've had awful warnings. Whatever happens, don't let anyone near her arm. I need to tell you stuff, but later."

Chloe nodded. "Does Molly know?" "I'm sure Midge has told her what she needs to. Did you see the stare?" Chloe nodded.

Rachel came up, went to Midge, "Good to see you back. A word?" Midge beckoned Molly with her eyes, the two went with Rachel. Kitty looked at Chloe questioningly, Chloe said "No idea."

The twins followed Rachel into a corner. A few minutes later they returned, Midge's bandage has had some black dress material stitched over it to cover the white.

"More appropriate" said Kitty. Midge smiled, "Rachel has a Mary Poppins bag, I'm sure there's enough in there to make a whole dress."

Molly said "We'll tell you about the police later, nothing to worry about, let's see if we can find some tea to drink, talk to some of these good people."

The afternoon turned into the evening, the hotel supplying a buffet for tea. Most of the talk was about Midge, Molly and their parents, though everyone wanted to know how Midge was. For the rest of the time here the twins stayed together.

The evening wore on, eventually people started to leave, all coming to the twins to wish them well. The last to go were Daniel and Audrey. Daniel had their room key, he gave it to Kitty. Audrey asked "You've no clothes here, would you like us to fetch some for you?" All four girls looked at each other, then Midge said "Thank you, we'll wear these tomorrow." Audrey nodded, "I can understand that."

Final goodbyes, the girls were left on their own.

The staff were starting to clear up. "Shall we go upstairs?" "Yes, we're all tired." Molly asked "Breakfast in bed? Think we're supposed to tell them now."

She went to the reception desk, asked the question. "Yes, what would you like?" She produced four breakfast menus. Molly shook her head, "It's okay, I know what we all want. Four glasses of orange juice, tea for four, two full English." The receptionist raised an eyebrow. Molly grinned, "We'll share, how do you think we keep our figures?" The receptionist laughed, nodded. "Time?" Molly turned to the others. "Eight" from Midge. "Eight it is" from the receptionist. She didn't need to ask their room number.

The girls went up, Kitty used the key, opened the door, inside she put the key on the floor by the door, after which she took charge. "The most important thing is Midge's arm. Let me tell you about it."

She went through the awful warnings, said about the possible permanent damage. Told them exactly how the triangular bandage was to be worn. Told them when the hospital appointments were.

Chloe then mentioned the police. She said the policemen couldn't take statements from the three men, too out of it to talk, all three were taken to the hospital. The police had a look at the recording from the camera that was pointed towards the door, they said it was perfectly clear what happened, but they couldn't get their heads round what Midge had done to the three. Naturally this would all be reviewed, but he couldn't see why there would be any legal come‑back, though they would need to take a statement from Midge. They did ask if Midge would want them to charge those men with assault, Molly said Midge wouldn't, the policeman who knew them a bit accepted that.

Midge said "I'm tired." Then, "The bandage." Kitty said "We will take it off first, but you must keep your arm relaxed. Sit on the bed, it'll be easier.

"Molly, you support Midge's forearm. Hold its weight, don't let it swing, we want to keep the upper arm where it is until her arm is hanging, okay?"

Midge sat on the end of the bed. Chloe, with nothing to do, sat on Midge's good side, held her hand. "Squeeze my hand if it helps." Midge gave it a brief thankyou squeeze.

Molly and Kitty stood side by side in front of Midge. Molly took Midge's fingers that were poking through the sling. Molly, barely above a whisper, "I'll ease your hand up a bit, take the weight of your arm from the sling." Kitty smiled, "Hadn't thought of that bit, good."

Molly gently lifted Midge's hand. Both the twins seemed okay.

Kitty undid the knot, but held the ends. "I'm going to lower the sling, okay?"

Nods, Molly said "I've got the weight, just got to stop it swinging at all."

Kitty lowered the sling, not a murmur, Molly nodded, "You can slip it out, we're okay."

Kitty allowed the outer part to drop, slid the inner past Midge's hand.

Kitty: "Lower her arm, try not to move her shoulder joint."

Molly did so, just one slight wince from her, but now Midge's arm was hanging straight down, her fingers curled up, knuckles resting on the bed.

"Are we all happy?" asked Kitty.

"So far, so good" from Midge, with a smile." Then "What about my dress, I can't lift my arms above my head."

Molly, a little grin, "That'll disappoint the jeweller." Then "Can we take it off downwards?" "No. her hips won't go by." Molly frowned, thought for a moment, stood, looked at her own dress, twisted to look at her back in the wardrobe mirror.

"The zip goes right down to below the hips, almost halfway down her bottom. Supposing we cut the slit up to waist level? Like this?"

At that, Molly simply ripped her own dress up the slit, right to the waist seam. "Chloe, unzip me." Chloe obliged. Molly proceeded to slip the shoulders off, then without using her hands at all, she shimmied, causing the dress to fall over her bottom, and down.

"See? It opens enough."

The other three all giggled. Chloe said "Trust Molly to come up with a solution like that."

Molly asked Midge to stand up. "Hold my arm, I have to lean forward."

Midge sat beside her, held her forearm, "We'll stand together."

They did so, slowly. Part way, Molly winced, Midge's eyes watered. They both stopped, Midge said "I tried to help, mistake. Okay, I've relaxed." They continued until both were standing straight up, Midge's arm was hanging down. Molly slowly let go, the slightest frown, but gone immediately. It was Molly who said "Just the one ouch moment and a bit of discomfort, no other pain."

Molly knelt in front of her sister, looked up at her, winked, gripped the skirt either side of the slit, but instead of ripping it up as she had for her own, she slowly pulled the two sides apart, just using very controlled strength. That way there was no jerking, nothing that would move Midge at all, just the stitching breaking.

From Kitty, "Good, that should do it. But no shimmying. We will have to be very careful.

"Okay, Molly, slip her dress off her bad shoulder."

Molly did so, she winced a couple of times, but got it down okay, Chloe did the other side. Molly and Chloe lowered the top of the dress, they pulled down gently on the bottom of the bodice, Molly guiding the side past Molly's arm. The lace crumpled, it all fell to her hips.

They could ease the skirt down over Midge's hips and bottom, the top just fell right down.

Molly stood up facing Midge. She stroked both of Midge's cheeks, one hand on each. She very slowly ran her hand down, her thumbs brushing Midge's lips, down her neck, to her breasts, down onto her tummy. By this time Molly was kneeling. Both hands converged at Midge's navel, they travelled together raking her pubic hair, her hands diverged again, they ran down Midge's inner thighs, fingers to the backs of her knees, right to her feet.

Kitty and Chloe were mesmerised by the love shown by one sister for the other.

Molly was sobbing, "I don't like you hurting."

Midge said to her, "It's my own fault, I let him hit me. It was a bit a harder than I expected." Chloe asked, "Why did you let him hit you at all?"

Molly answered for her. "She wanted an excuse to kill him. If she could have used both fists, he'd be dead."

Midge: "They spoilt my Mummy and Daddy's wake." Molly: "They all deserve to be dead."

Kitty shook her head, then "Whatever you do, don't tell anyone else that, especially the police." She got herself into organising mode. "Molly, take Midge into the bathroom, help her do whatever she needs to do. You'll need to clean her up, whatever. I think she can have a shower. It's safer if you do everything for her. If you need any help, we're here." Grinning, she added "Oh, and no hanky‑panky."

Both twins smiled, Molly took Midge's good hand, led her into the bathroom.

Quarter of an hour later, the twins came out, both were looking fresh, both were grinning. "That was fun." said Midge. "More for you than for me" from Molly.

Meanwhile, Kitty had picked their dresses up, hung them over a chair, Chloe had pulled the quilt right down. Kitty asked the twins "Do you think you two can get to the centre of the bed, Molly on Midge's bad side? We can go outside of you two, I think that would be safest."

"We can do that" from Midge. "Could you move the quilt away from the bottom of the bed? I think it would be easiest for me to get up there, then pull myself straight back." Kitty and Chloe slid the quilt further away from the bed to give space on the floor for Midge. Midge sat on the bed, had a feel of pushing herself up with her good arm. Molly grimaced, but no yelp. Using the arm, Midge started to walk herself up the bed until she was sitting so that if she laid down, her head would be on a pillow, but she stopped. Molly said "Midge wants help. Molly do it."

Kitty and Chloe smiled to each other, that little bit of Molly‑speak meant she was a bit happier.

Molly knelt up onto Midge's good side of the bed, walked herself on her knees until she was behind Midge. She slowly and carefully manoeuvred herself so she was sitting well behind Midge, legs splayed one each side. Chloe went to Midge's side, put one hand behind her elbow, the other held her wrist. Molly put out her hands, she could just reach the top of Midge's back. "Ready, sis? Ready Chloe? Gently, slowly, lean back."

That seemed a little incongruous, Molly asking for gentleness and slowness.

Midge, with absolute trust in her sister, leant back, allowing Molly to guide her down, though Midge was doing most of the work with her tummy muscles. Chloe followed, keeping Midge's arm in line with her body.

With her back right down, Chloe's hands were trapped underneath Midge's arm, she was able to push down, indenting the mattress to let her pull her hands out without moving Midge's arm. Midge's head was resting at the top of Molly's thighs, her head pressed into Molly's stomach. From Molly "Can one of you put a pillow under her head if I hold it up?"

Chloe pushed one across, Molly managed to lift herself so that she was standing, legs wide apart to be as low as possible, her bottom against the headboard. She was leaning forward while holding Midge's head, she lowered it to the pillow.

"Molly, that was inelegant, even for you" from Kitty.

Molly stepped to Midge's bad side, carefully lay down beside her.

Kitty and Chloe grabbed each others' hands, ran into the bathroom. They did what was necessary, they found two hotel toothbrushes and toothpaste already used by Midge and Molly, they used them for themselves, then showered together.

When they emerged into the bedroom, both Midge and Molly were fast asleep, Midge still flat on her back, Molly on her side facing Midge. Her face was level with Midge's bad shoulder, she had her hand resting over Midge's tummy.

Kitty and Chloe looked at each other. Kitty said "We need something over us, but not the weight of the quilt, strip the cover off it, we'll just use that."

They removed the quilt cover, put the quilt out of the way on a chair, then gently laid the cover over the sleeping girls. Chloe climbed in on Molly's side, turned onto her side to face Molly, put her hand on Molly's hip.

Kitty turned out the room light, got in beside Midge, lay on her side facing Midge, put her hand on Molly's, which was still over Midge's tummy.

Within seconds they were all asleep.

They were woken by a knock on the door, "Breakfast".

Molly instantly whispered in Midge's ear, "Lie still", afraid she might move her arm. Midge nodded, "Okay."

Another knock. "Come in" called Molly. The waitress used her key, opened the door, wheeled in a trolly. She glanced at the bed, did a double take, "I wondered why there were four juices and teas."

"There are two trays, where do you want them?"

Kitty said to Molly and Midge, "You two lie still until we are organised." She nodded to Chloe, the two slid themselves up until they were sitting up against the headboard. The waitress opened her mouth when she saw that the two girls were naked, but closed it again as Chloe said "On our laps, thank you."

The waitress placed one tray on Chloe's lap, couldn't help staring at Chloe's breasts. "Beautiful", she said, then "Sorry, shouldn't have said that." Chloe grinned, gave her chest a little side‑to‑side jiggle, the waitress backed off. She got the other tray, went round to Kitty, placed the tray on Kitty's lap, looked at Kitty's chest to find she was already jiggling. She shook her head, went back to the trolly, carried two juices, put them on one tray, repeated for the other. Back to the trolly, she took a tray with the teapot, milk, cups and saucers, looked to see where to put it. "On the table, we'll sort it, thank you."

The waitress put it down. Almost running, she grabbed the trolly, pushed it out of the room and shut the door.

"Poor girl," said Chloe. Kitty asked "What would we have done if it had been a waiter?" Molly replied "Just the same, I hope." From Midge, "Please, don't make me laugh."

Kitty and Chloe each got a glass of orange juice, each tried to get it so that the two lying down could drink. It was near enough impossible. Chloe lifted the glass to her own mouth, took some in. Molly turned her head to face up. Chloe leant over her, put her mouth over Molly's, gave her the mouthful, which she swallowed. Kitty copied for Midge, taking great care to get it right so that Midge didn't have to move. Chloe and Kitty gulped their own down. Glasses put down, the two outside girls used knives and forks to cut pieces off their breakfast, alternately putting the forkful into the mouth of the girl lying beside them, then into their own.

This all took quite a while, all the time the girls were desperately trying not to laugh for fear of disturbing Midge's arm.

Kitty said "We've not had our tea to drink yet." Molly decided "Wait until we are up, too risky otherwise. It'll be cold, but that's the best way."

Kitty and Chloe lifted the trays, got out of the bed, placed the trays on the table, lifted the cover off the two lying there. The girls did the opposite of what they did to lay Midge down, it went more easily. Molly said "That didn't hurt as much."

Kitty told them to stay sitting on the bed, she'd pour the tea.

They drank their tea sitting along the foot of the bed, pretending to be very prim holding their cups and saucers. With only one useable hand, Midge couldn't hold her saucer, so she carefully placed it on Kitty's lap rather than her own, just to be friendly.

Their tea drunk, Molly took Midge into the bathroom. Kitty and Chloe heard some splashing and some laughter, when the two emerged they were grinning. Chloe and Kitty went in, there was water splashed everywhere. They'd no idea what the twins were doing, so kept very straight faces when they came out.

They found Molly in front of Midge. Molly was holding up one of their dresses, she said "Come on, let's get this on her."

Kitty: "Molly, can you help her stand? We have to learn to do these things with only one of us helping, but only if we can."

Molly nodded, held Midge's arm. They exchanged a glance, Midge bent forward, Molly just followed her movement. It went very smoothly, within seconds both were standing. Molly carefully released Midge's arm.

Kitty said "Good, that seemed to go well, just don't get overconfident."

Chloe picked up one of the twins' dresses, she arranged it on the floor so that Midge could step into it.

"I think this is a three‑man job" said Chloe, "one either side lifting, Molly looking after her arm."

That's exactly what they did, first lifting the dress up her legs, they had a little trouble getting it past her bottom. Chloe remarked "Midge, your bottom is too curvy." Midge looked at Molly, Molly said "She says it's just right." They wriggled the dress as far as Midge's waist. Molly reached down to get her shoulder strap, they held the dress's neckline just below the lace to pull the dress up. Molly guided the strap round Midge's bad arm, Chloe helped Midge feed her good arm through.

In no time, the straps were up on Midge's shoulders.

Midge's shoulder had gone blotchy green and yellow, it showed vividly from under the strap. The three just looked at it until Midge brought them out of it. "Stop staring at my pretty colouring, straighten my dress out, zip me up, then get that sling on me."

Chloe and Kitty, between them, smoothed the dress everywhere Molly was just making sure her arm didn't get touched. Kitty pulled the zip up, it took a few seconds, the dress had to be pulled together and zipped in stages because it was so tight‑fitting.

Chloe did the bandage to make the sling, Molly making sure neither of the other two moved Midge's arm. When it was done, Molly said "It doesn't hurt quite so much. I think I'm beginning to heal."

Kitty ignored the pronoun, hoped she did mean Midge. She'd never understood this pain transfer from one twin to the other, but it seemed real.

Midge went to the mirror, admired herself in it, then noticed the slit. Chloe asked "Do you think anyone will complain?"

Molly replied,"They'd better watch out if they do. I like it."

The other girls slipped on their dresses, helped each other with the zips. Molly looked at her sister, looked at herself in the mirror, looked at Chloe and Kitty. She went over to Kitty, grabbed the skirt either side of the sit, ripped the seem up to the waist seam. She repeated on Chloe's. "That's better."

Kitty and Chloe went to the mirror, pushing and shoving each other, both trying to see themselves. "You're right" they said together.

A quick look round the room, they'd left nothing because they'd brought nothing.

They went down the stairs, Midge holding the banister rail with her good hand. Chloe went down in front, Molly was beside Midge, Kitty behind. They were not taking any chances that someone might touch Midge's arm.

As they walked to the reception desk, they got some admiring glances ‑ or rather stares ‑ from the few people in the reception area. Kitty put the key down on the reception counter. "I hope the room is paid for." "Yes, all taken care of. Just a moment, please, the manager wants to talk to you."

A moment later, he came to the counter. He did a double take at what he was seeing, pulled himself together. He said "We are so sorry about what happened, those people should never have got in. If there's anything we can do to try to make it up to you?" Midge replied "We don't blame you, it is what it is. But" she grinned "if they do come round again, call me, I still have one good arm." He looked at her, "In all seriousness, will you be all right?" "Yes, I'll be fine, just a bit bruised."

He looked a little relieved. "Are you all right for transport? We could run you somewhere in the hotel minibus?" Chloe looked down at her thigh, moved her leg forward a bit, saw some skin. "Midge, are you all right to walk?" Molly replied "Of course I am." Once again, the wrong one answering, but Midge's smile said that it was a good answer.

"Thank you, no, we'll walk. We could do with some fresh air."

He shook Kitty's hand, then Chloe's. He turned to Molly. As he took her hand, she pulled him down, kissed one of his cheeks while Midge kissed the other. Before he had a chance to collect himself, the girls had left. They set out walking four abreast, Midge with Molly on her bad side, the other two either side of them. Midge very quickly learnt to totally relax her arm in its sling, within a few paces they were striding out, in step, all of them smiling. Soon Chloe and Kitty had their arms round Midge and Molly's waists, Molly had her arm resting across Midge's shoulders, she could hold Midge slightly away from herself to stop her arm touching.

They nodded to people they knew, smiled at everybody, there was sporadic clapping by some. They got admiring looks from almost everybody, women as well as men. They seemed to make everyone smile as they pass.

After an hour's walking, they came to their little row of shops, they went to Daniel's. Midge and Molly stayed outside, while Kitty and Chloe pretty much crashed through into his reception area, where Audrey was behind the desk. She immediately got up, went round to them, hugged them both. Daniel came out off his office, "What's all this commotion …" he stopped when he saw them, Audrey just about crushing them. "Let the poor girls breathe" he said, then "Where are the other two? Is Midge all right?" "She's okay" from Kitty. "They're outside, didn't want to risk banging her arm."

Daniel and Audrey followed the two girls onto the pavement, a little crowd had gathered round Midge and Molly, well wishers, some asking questions, many just admiring. Daniel called out, "Come on, give the girls some peace, they've come through some pretty traumatic events."

"You wouldn't think so if you saw them dancing along the street just now." Daniel looked at the man who had said that, he quite quietly said "Believe me, they are doing that to hide their true feelings. Under it all, they are really hurting."

The man looked at him, looked at the girls, said to those around him, "Come on then, break it up, let's show them some respect." Daniel nodded his thanks.

He turned to Midge, "How are you really?" "Okay. I'll get over this" ‑ glancing at her arm ‑ "in no time. We'll never get over …" She started to gently cry. "Yes", said Daniel. "Just know you have many friends around you, we will help in any way we can. You'd like to go home, I expect? And you don't have your key? Tell you what, I'll walk with you, Audrey can mind the shop." Audrey nodded, she, too, had tears in her eyes.

The girls managed to pick up their almost dancing walk, Daniel trailing behind, not sure what his emotions were, sorrow for them, fatherly love, or instinctive male lust. The last he put away, he's a happily married man, and two of these are effectively his daughters, all were young enough to be his daughters.

He unlocked their front door. "Can I do anything for you? Would you like me to come in, make you tea or anything?" Chloe answered, "No, thank you, for everything." She reached up, kissed him on his cheek. Kitty went to him, whispered "Thanks, we'll look after them", kissed him on his other cheek. Molly, for the first time since the hotel, moved away from Midge, grasped Daniel's hands, pulled him down, kissed his forehead, "That's from me, this is from Midge." She gave him a kiss on the mouth, but for once it was a 'daughter to father' kiss. Midge smiled to Daniel.

He turned away, just raised his hand. He didn't dare look at them, he'd have burst into tears.

The girls stood in the hall for a moment, all looked a little lost. Eventually Kitty lifted her head, "Let's get these dresses off. Midge, it's best if we all help you." Molly said "Just a minute." She went into the dining room, took the sheet from the table, "They don't need this here now." Midge started crying, then took a step towards the dining room. Chloe put her hand on Midge's good arm, "Kitty will help. They wouldn't want you to damage yourself any more." Midge nodded, Kitty went in, helped Molly fold up the sheet, put it down on the settee, they did the same with the blanket.

Kitty whispered to Molly, "We'll sort the furniture later, let's get Midge comfortable." Molly rubbed her own shoulder, "It did hurt a little bit coming here, Molly doesn't like Midge hurting." Kitty kissed her, turned, they walked back into the hall, Molly carrying the blanket, Chloe the sheet. With a nod of thanks, Molly passed the blanket to Chloe, took over holding Midge's arm.

Midge muttered "I'm tired." Molly: "I know, let's get you upstairs." Midge started crying, tears rolling down her cheek. Molly explained "Daddy used to say 'Let's get you upstairs' then he'd carry us up, one under each arm." Now she was crying. Kitty and Chloe could only stand there, both of them now also with tears. After a couple of minutes, Midge said "Come on, this will never do. This is the last thing they would want from us."

Both twins perked up, smiled at each other, then at Chloe and Kitty. Molly said "I'll get her up, you come up after us, help us."

There wasn't room on the stairs for the twins side by side without touching, and the handrail was on Midge's bad side for going up. Molly: "Use the wall to keep you steady, I'm right behind. I'd offer to push your bum, but …" Midge said "Normally I'd like that. Just touch me, let me know you're there." Molly reached up, put her hand on the small of Midge's back, a bit of a stretch as they went up, but both needed the contact. Kitty and Chloe were a few steps behind, holding hands, both looking anxiously at the twins. Usually any of them would be running up or down the stairs, fighting, tripping each other. Falling down the stairs and the resultant bruising was all part of their normal play. But this time none of them wanted Midge to fall.

At the top, Molly led Midge into the bedroom. "Stand there, sis, we'll get your dress off." Kitty said "Molly, I think we should see how well you can do on your own with her, you are always with her, we may not be."

Molly: "You will help if we need it, won't you?" "Good god, yes, the moment you want us, we are here. It's just in case, this isn't a challenge." Chloe commented "It's not often Molly doesn't just dive straight in, but Molly, for once I'm glad to see you are not your usual self."

Molly smiled, "It's not often my sister is hurt like this. Come on, let's see what we can do." Molly started her own organising. In barely a whisper to Midge, "Use you good hand to hold your bad one like I did before."

Molly undid the knot at Midge's neck, but held the ends, she gave her neck a kiss when it was undone. "Got your arm?" the slightest nod. Just as Kitty did, Molly allowed the outer part of the bandage to drop, then slid down the rest from behind Midge's arm. Neither showed any sign of hurting. Molly tossed the bandage onto a chair, touched Midge's hand, whispered "Can you do this? I can hold the elbow, stop it swinging." Midge, as if to herself, "I think I can, but I need to make sure it stays floppy. I'll try something, I'll sit on the end of the bed by the corner, then my hand will be able to hang over the end. I'll try to just relax the arm instead of all of me." Molly looked at her, a little worried, Midge looked back at her. After a couple of seconds, Midge said "All of you can support me in case it goes wrong." She gave a hint of a nod which said to Molly 'We can do this.'

Molly turned to the others, "You heard?" The twins often didn't know whether their conversations are verbal or by looks. Kitty responded, "Are you sure?" Then from Molly, "Midge wants to do this", said in a manner which said 'No argument'. "If she can't restrict this to just her side, she'll simply collapse completely, that will damage her arm." She grimaced, put a hand on her own shoulder. She continued "Chloe, kneel on the floor beside her, one hand on her chest, the other her back. Kitty, on the bed the other side, one hand round her neck, the other on her side nearest to you. I'll concentrate on her arm, but I'm not touching her unless it's needed."

Kitty and Chloe did as they were told. Midge looked round, grinned, "If this works, it'll be easy. Ready?"

Midge frowned, closed her eyes. A few seconds later, she started to sag. "No!" yelled Molly. Midge snapped out of it, sat up straight again. She said "Nearly, another try." The frown again, but with eyes open wide, staring at Molly right in front of her. She blinked a couple of times, but other than that she held her stare. Molly also had Midge's frown, staring at Midge. A few seconds later, Molly spoke, "You've done it, girl." Molly smiled, but Midge remained with a frown, "Don't know how much or for how long, I'll move my arm now, if it hurts, take over."

The girls maintained their positions, Midge used her good hand to lower her bad arm, keeping the elbow at her side, until it was hanging straight down. "Got it, didn't hurt at all."

Molly "How much of you?" Midge: "I think I got it just right. Not easy." Molly: "You'll have to teach me that." "Will do, but not just now", said with a grin.

Molly: "Can you get out of it okay?" Midge: "Just hold positions until I've done it, it might go wrong."

She gave a little frown, two seconds later the frown changed to a grin. She wriggled her bad side fingers, slowly bent her fingers into a fist. "Got it, all good. I'm all me again."

Kitty couldn't help but ask "What do you mean, 'all me'?" Molly answered, "Not easy to explain, best I can do is to say we remove the body from the mind, my body isn't entirely 'me' any more. Don't know how she's done the partial bit, doesn't matter now, that's for later."

"Can you stand up?" Molly asked Midge. Midge nodded, "I think so, just need to hold my arm." She leant forward, holding her arm perfectly, she stood up. "Easy‑peasy."

Kitty: "Don't get over confident."

"Gotcha."

Midge took her shoulder straps off her shoulders, let her good arm hang down as well as her bad. She said "One of you, pull my dress off me." All three started to go towards her, Kitty stopped, said to Chloe "Let Molly do it."

Molly stood in front of Midge, held the dress a little way above the waist, pulled it down a bit. She gathered it up, pulled a bit more. All the time, she was staring into Midge's eyes. Kitty and Chloe once again witnessed the love between them. Molly carefully pulled Midge's dress down until it fell to the floor.

Midge said "I'm hungry." They went downstairs. Midge could use the handrail going down, but Molly insisted on being two steps in front in case Midge slipped, but all went well.

The next few days passed, Midge following her rules. They didn't wear any clothes in the house, saved the bother of dealing with Midge's arm. Midge wore the sling during the day, it was taken off at night. Kitty and Chloe did go the shops a couple of times (for which they did wear their dresses).

They fielded a couple of phone calls from Daniel, told him they were fine, he wasn't to worry.

When the day came for Midge's first hospital appointment, they all put on their normal dresses, Being buttoned right down the front, they could get Midge's on before her sling was done up without a problem. No one asked the question, 'Will they let all three of us go in with Midge?'.

It was an hour's walk to the hospital, they set off in plenty of time, walking as before, four abreast, striding out. As before, people around stopped to watch them, most were very happy to see them, though some did tut‑tut at the display.

They reached the hospital, Chloe and Kitty burst through the entrance doors, held them open for the more careful Midge and Molly, Molly all the while making sure Midge's arm wasn't touched.

Chloe went to the main reception desks, asked for guidance to the physiotherapy department. She thanked the receptionist, then "Follow me".

Along the corridor, they reached lifts and stairs. "Up a floor" said Chloe. Kitty asked "Which do you want?" Chloe already had one foot on the first step, she said "Stairs, lifts sometimes jar." The stairs had handrails on both sides, Midge could hold on with one hand. Chloe ran up in front, held the stairwell door open on the next level, Molly went up beside Midge, Kitty stayed close behind. Kitty started up the stairs with her hand touching Midge's back.

They followed Chloe until she led them to the physiotherapy department, the receptionist there said "Ah, you must be Midge," talking to the one with the sling. "He's fitting you in, I'll let him know you're here. She made a quick phone call, "Take a seat, he'll see you when he can."

There were a few in the waiting area, all were looking at the foursome in total silence.

The girls, all with big smiles, looked round. There were a few empty chairs scattered around, three together at the end of a row. Kitty and Chloe headed for these, they sat in the outer two, both patted the middle one. Midge and Molly grinned, they come over, Molly sat on the middle chair, Midge sat half‑sideways on her lap, keeping her bad arm away. This left a lot of thigh showing, nobody in the waiting area seemed to mind.

Kitty and Chloe started walking their fingers up Molly's arms, she was desperately trying to keep still for Midge. "Stop it" she said quite loudly, "I like it." Laughter from many of the waiting people.

Very soon, the current patient came out. The physiotherapist said to the waiting patients, "Hope you don't mind, I have to see her." He noticed how Midge was perched on Molly, showing a lot of leg. He looked up at the ceiling, muttered "I was told you were trouble." Then said more audibly, "Midge, mind how you get down, you can come in now."

Midge slid off Molly, the therapist nodded because Midge was obviously being careful. Molly got up straight away, held Midge's good hand, turned and beckoned the other two. She quite loudly said "We all need to know the next rules." Kitty and Chloe instantly sprung to their feet, dashed into the consultation room before anyone could protest. Midge and Molly walked at a normal pace, they followed the therapist. As he got inside, he looked at the first two, backs leaning on the wall beside the door, giggling like schoolchildren. Which was, of course, exactly what they were.

"All right", he said, "I'm not going to argue. Now, Midge, can you sit up on the side of the bed?"

She did so, he watched how she used her good arm to position herself, once again nodding his aproval.

Meanwhile, Molly went behind the consultant's chair, started swinging it side to side on its swivel.

"Good. We will take the sling off. One of you, show me how you've been doing it."

Molly came forward, Midge and Molly were well practiced by now, within a quarter of a minute the sling was off, Midge's arm hanging straight down. The therapist was impressed. He looked at Molly, then at Midge, "They said you were exactly the same, you are. Wow." He looked again more closely at their faces, then as much of their bodies as he dared. "How do people tell you apart?

From the wall Kitty called out "Put a sling on one of them."

"Never mind. Midge, let's see what movement you have, tell me the moment it hurts."

He very gently took her hand, moved it forward a bit, no reaction. He frowned, moved it forward some more. Surprised, he kept moving it. When it was straight out in front, Midge said "Discomfort, not pain." "Can we do a bit more?" "Go for it." He lifted it some more, it was Molly who called out "Stop." Midge said "Yes, that's beginning to hurt."

He looked puzzled, muttered to himself "How did she know? Must pick up micro‑expressions." He'd failed to notice that, with him standing in front of Midge, Molly could barely see Midge from where she was."Okay, let's try sideways. He lowered her arm until it was straight down, started lifting it sideways. Once again he could take it above horizontal before Molly said "Stop."

He shook his head. "This is ridiculous." He lowered it, frowning. "You are sure it wasn't hurting until your sister said 'stop'?" "No, it was fine, just a little discomfort beyond being level."

"Let's try backwards." He moved it backwards, it was the natural joint restriction that stopped it, not pain.

"I'm totally amazed. I'm going to ask you to move it yourself, try forwards, take it slowly. "

Midge complied, lifted her arm, it was just below horizontal when Molly said "Stop".

"Down again. Hmm. Sideways?" Midge raised it to the side, it got about half way to horizontal, once again Molly said "Stop".

"Down, then backwards." Midge did so, but she could only move it a little way, she stopped without Molly saying anything. Midge said "It's not hurting, it doesn't want to go."

"You can put your arm down. Can you bend your elbow?" Midge raised it, she could just touch her shoulder with her fingers.

He once again shook his head. "Look, this is incredible. Wait a moment."

He went outside, asked his receptionist to get Midge a CT scan, now. He emphasised 'Now'.

He went back into his room, to find Midge, her arm held forward horizontally, then moving it to the side and back down again. He stared for a moment, then "You can bin the sling." He picked it up, dropped it in a waste bin.

"Look, that's so good, it's unbelievable. I want you to have a scan, I'll get the doctor to look at it, can you come back here afterwards?" Midge nodded, smiling, she hated the sling.

He led them to his waiting area, went to his receptionist. She told him "They can fit her in straight away, they're ahead of schedule, they've had a cancellation."

"You know your way?" "We'll find it." "Okay, off you go, but still treat that arm with care."

"Yes, doctor" said Molly. He looked at Molly, looked at Midge, "Perhaps I should make you wear the sling again. Now, get off with you."

They went to leave, all of them laughing. Kitty and Chloe reached the door first, colliding with the doorframe as they tried to go out together, Kitty bounced back, fell flat on her face on the floor. All four girls were laughing. Kitty rolled over, Chloe leant over her, put her arm down, yanked Kitty up, gave her a hug, all this visible to those in the waiting room, all of whom were laughing at the antics. Kitty pushed Chloe through the door, almost pushing her over. Midge and Molly were both laughing. Molly took Midge's hand ‑ as it happened, her bad one, looked at her, led her gently out.

The physiotherapist turned to his waiting patients, said "So sorry, that was only meant to be two minutes." A lady there said "That was so nice, such lovely girls. I'll wait all day to see that again." Murmurs of agreement.

"Okay, then, who's next?"

The girls pretty much danced their way through the hospital to the X‑ray department, Midge was expected. The radiographer recognised her, even in the very different dress. The blonde hair probably helped, but it wasn't Midge she's seen, it was Molly, who was the first twin in after Kitty and Chloe had done their bursting through the door thing (only no one fell over this time).

After the usual double take, Midge said "It's me with the shoulder." "In you come then, I gather you are not in as much discomfort."

Midge nodded, "It's a lot better, thank you." "That's what the physiotherapist said, he doesn't really believe it. In you come, we're waiting for you." Molly and Midge reluctantly let go of each other. Midge gave Molly a kiss, "I'll be all right, sis, you'll only have to come out straight away." Molly gave Midge a kiss, "Okay, be good."

"Not a chance" Kitty and Chloe said in unison. All four girls laughed as Midge went into the scanner room.

Chloe and Kitty turned to Molly, "It's all right, she'll be fine." Molly had started to cry a little, Midge having left her. The radiographer saw she was upset, "Here, you can see her through this window … but only space for one of you" as all three started move. Kitty pushed Molly to the window, she and Chloe started fighting over the only available visitor's chair. "Can't you behave?" "Sorry." Kitty pushed Chloe onto the chair, sat on her lap. "We'll be good."

The radiographer went to the window, put her arm round Molly, who had tears running down her face. "She's all right, nothing bad can happen." Molly turned her face to the radiographer, used the lapel of her white coat to wipe her tears away. Molly perked up a bit, "Better now, thank you."

While the scan was taking place, Molly was staring at her sister. The radiographer put her hand on Molly's shoulder, Molly put her hand over it, holding it there.

The scan over, the radiographer whispered to Molly, "You can fetch her out." Molly raced to the scanner room door. As soon as the assistant opened it, Molly was straight in, went to her sister, gave her a kiss, helped her to her feet. Without thinking, she was using Midge's bad hand, but it didn't hurt at all.

Kitty and Chloe stood up, both give Midge a kiss. The radiographer said to them, "You're to go back to physio, wait there."

All four of them gave the radiographer a kiss. Kitty and Chloe once again barged their way through the door, Midge came out next, Molly was behind Midge, her hands gently resting on Midge's shoulders.

The radiographer turned to her assistant, "What a handful." The assistant nodded, "But so nice to see them." "Perhaps not every day, you can have too much of a good thing."

The girls raced back to the physiotherapy area, dodging staff and patients as they went. They managed to avoid hitting anyone, but did have to shout out a few sorrys after some close calls.

They got back, Chloe pushed Kitty through the door, Kitty just about managed to stay upright. A glance round, only two of the vacant chairs were next to each other. Chloe was first to sit on one, Kitty took the other. Without pause, Midge and Molly sat on their laps.

They looked round, a few smiles from others waiting there. In unison, Midge and Molly said "Hello, again."

Molly was getting stared at, being Molly she was sittting somewhat carelessly. She winked at one young boy who was staring at her. Then she saw his mother looking at her aghast, she mouthed 'Sorry' and brought her knees together.

It wasn't long before the doctor who'd first dealt with Midge came into the waiting room. He immediately spotted the girls (difficult to miss). He came to them, smiling. He said "I recognise three of you. You're Kitty. Don't know the other one underneath" "Chloe" he heard, muffled because her mouth was filled with Molly's hair that she was chewing "But I have two Midges, neither of whom looks hurt. Have I got to prod shoulders to find out which is my patient? Midge raised her bad arm in front of her, bent the elbow until her forearm was straight up, extended her forefinger. "Me, sir" she said. More to himself than Midge, "He said you'd done well, I'd say unbelievably well." To the girls, "I'll wait until the physio's free, we'll go in together."

A minute after the physio's patient came out, the physio appeared, nodded to the doctor, "Come in. Midge, come in as well."

Instantly all four girls jumped up. Kitty and Chloe raced to the consulting room door, dodging round the doctor and the consultant. They got to the door, one stood either side, each with an exaggerated arm and hand showing the way for Midge and Molly into the room.

After the twins had entered, Kitty and Chloe both moved to get in, bumped into each other, bounced back. Kitty made the same gesture as she had done before, Chloe started towards the door, but grabbed Kitty's hand. Swinging her by her arm, she pretty much threw Kitty though the door, Kitty ended up sliding on the floor on her front. Kitty picked herself up, went back to the door, both of them were grinning like Cheshire cats. Kitty took Chloe by the hand, and holding it high like an eighteenth century courtier, she led Chloe in.

Every single person in the waiting room burst out laughing, including the doctor and physio. Kitty and Chloe looked out through the door. With a serious questioning look on both their faces, and in perfect unison, they asked "What?" The laughter just intensified.

The physio asked the doctor to go in, the doctor responded "Not sure if I dare." By now, the girls were all sitting cross‑legged on the floor against a wall. Both the professionals shook their heads, then turned their attention to the computer on the desk. The physio brought up the first scan, viewed it, then put on the second. The doctor was open mouthed. "Show me the first again."

He viewed each two or three times, pausing them occasionally to look at one image.

The doctor turned to the girls, looking alternately at Midge and Molly. "Okay, which of you has the bad shoulder." Molly stuck her arm straight up, "Not me, sir." "Oh, I'm done being polite to you, it's pointless. Midge, here. now." But he couldn't keep the smile off his face.

Midge used her legs to push herself straight up, she walked over to the doctor, stood in front of him, smiling sweetly.

"I want to feel your shoulder, tell me where it hurts." She nodded. Molly, still sat by the wall, lost the smile that had been on her face, she stared intently at the doctor and Midge. Chloe and Kitty saw this, each took one of Molly's hands, squeezed it and held it.

The doctor very gently put his hand round Midge's shoulder, felt all round, frowned. "Anything?" he asks. It was Kitty who answered "That doesn't hurt her." The doctor turned to her, "How do you know she's not hiding it?" "I'm holding Molly's hand, she didn't flinch."

The doctor looked at the physio questioningly. The physio said "Trouble is, I believe it."

The doctor turned again to Midge, felt further, pressed his thumb or a finger in odd places. A couple of times both Molly and Midge flinched, each time Molly said "That hurts a bit." A questioning look to Midge, she nodded. "Just a bit."

The doctor shook his head, not understanding how one knew the pain of the other. "Wait here girls." He beckoned the physio outside, "Less of an upheaval than asking them to go."

A few minutes later, they came back in. All four girls were now sat cross‑legged where they were before, hands in laps, innocent smiles on their faces.

"Right", the doctor started. "You" he looked between Midge and Molly, he'd no idea which was which now "have just defied everything I know about healing times. All my text‑books need re‑writing. But none of my colleagues would ever believe this. As far as I am concerned, you are as near healed as makes no difference. There are just a few knots in there that will sort themselves out with suitable exercises, which my colleague will tell you to do." He added almost to himself, "But I reckon you'll mend without the exercises, particularly if you are as active as these other two have just shown."

Talking to the girls again, "Just don't bump too hard into door‑frames. I'll ask you to see me in a week's time, I think we'll both see you together, okay?" All four girls nodded. "Not all four of you?" All four girls nodded very vigorously. "Oh, god." He nodded to the physio, started towards the door, shaking his head. All four girls instantly jumped up, each in turn stood on tiptoe, gave him a kiss on the cheek and said "Thank you."

He almost ran out of the room.

The physio said to the twins (he also had no idea which was which) "Okay, as the doctor said, you are almost completely better. All I can suggest you do is to move your arm in all directions, when it starts to hurt, ease off a bit, but a little pain is good here. Just don't overdo it. You can start building up your strength, lifting, pushing, pulling, resistance exercises. Go up to when it hurts a bit, back off. Twenty minute waits between goes. It all helps healing." Then, to himself, "In a normal person."

"You'll get a letter with a proper appointment to see us." With a twinkle in his eye, "I'm not sure I really want to see you again. Now, clear off, but don't knock the wall down as you go."

He got the kissed cheek treatment from Kitty, Chloe and Molly. Midge also gave him a kiss on the cheek, but she added a (light for her) hug. "Resistance exercise" she said, grinning. She let go, chasing out of the room after the others. They dashed out of the waiting room, waving to those still seated, Midge, without thinking, was using her bad arm, but it didn't hurt.

The physio came out of the room, trying to keep a straight face, pointed to the mother and her son, said "Come in. Hope they didn't disturb you too much." She replied, "They were lovely, but one of them did accidentally show us she was beautiful everywhere. She looked down at her son, he was just staring at the door the girls had just ran out through. "I suppose he's got to learn some time."

The girls walked home. This time when four abreast, their arms were round each others' waists, Midge's arm forgotten apart from a couple of twinges. After the first one, Midge said to Molly, "He said a little pain is all right." They sometimes had to split into pairs, the two behind put their hands on the shoulders of the ones in front, close marching. They did that four in line a couple of times when they had to go single file.
